A lot of people come into treatment thinking the substance is the problem. And it is, but it's usually not the whole story.
Anxiety, depression, trauma. These are the things that quietly build up until substances feel like the only thing that makes them manageable. It's not weakness. It's a person doing what they can to get through the day.
This is called a co-occurring disorder, and it's more common than most people realize. According to NIDA, about half of people who experience a mental illness will also struggle with a substance use disorder at some point in their lives.
That's why treating addiction without addressing the mental health piece underneath it rarely works long term. Real recovery means looking at both.
If you or someone you love is struggling, know that help exists and it can address all of it, not just the surface. We're here when you're ready.
