When you are in a heightened state of emotion, such as anxiety or anger, your nervous system automatically goes into survival mode, and you use any number of fight/flight mechanisms. You are in a reactionary state of being. You cannot think clearly or rationally in this state. You need to bring your body and brain back into a state of calm.
Taking several slow deep breaths is one of the easiest ways to “reboot the system,” turn off the alarm bells, and calm the body and brain. When calm, you are in a proactive state of being. Once you are back in a state of equilibrium or calm, you will be able to think clearly and rationally. And then be able to ask yourself, “what do I want to have happen next, that I can control, is in my best interest, and will help me move forward?” This multi-layered question helps to bring you clarity in the situation and help you to figure out the next right step forward.
