Summer Sun Exposure Tips:

Keep babies younger than 6 months out of direct sunlight. Find shade using structures, umbrellas, or canopies.

Dress your children in cool, comfortable clothing that covers the body. Ideally these clothes should have a tight weave.

Wear a hat with an all-around 3-inch brim to shield the face, ears, and back of the neck.

Limit their sun exposure between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., when UV rays are strongest.

Have your children wear youth sized sunglasses with at least 99% UV protection.

Use sunscreen that says "broad-spectrum" on the label; that covers both UVB and UVA rays. Use a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 15 (up to SPF 50). An SPF of 15 or 30 should be fine for most people.

If possible, avoid the sunscreen ingredient oxybenzone because of concerns about mild hormonal properties.

For sensitive areas of the body (Ie nose, cheeks, ears) choose a sunscreen with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide.

A recent study showing cleaning product injuries and how to best protect your child from accidental injury or ingestions.

The study showed that detergent packets and spray bottles were the main culprits. The most common age was 1 year (43%) followed by 2 years (26%). About 59% of injuries were caused by ingestion of the cleaning product while 39% were from contact. Bleach and detergents were the most common product types (30% and 29% respectively), according to the study. Spray bottles accounted for about 28% of injuries, most of these injuries were to the eyes. Authors noted these bottles typically are easy for toddlers to operate.

The study provided several tips to keep children safe:

Store cleaning products and detergents up, away and out of sight of young children, preferably in a locked cabinet.

Look for child-resistant containers and keep cleaning products in their original containers.

Call the national poison help line at 800-222-1222 right away if a child has come into contact with a household cleaning product or other dangerous product. Families do not need to wait for symptoms to appear.

As we continue to encourage kids to eat more whole foods and less packaged foods we continue to see kids eating processed foods. We encourage parents to teach their children about the ingredients in packaged foods. Consider looking at the Yuka application to help your children learn while at the grocery store.

Yuka is a mobile app that scans food barcodes to rate their health impact on a 0–100 scale, focusing on nutritional quality (60%), additives (30%), and organic status (10%). It provides color-coded ratings (excellent to bad) to help users identify healthier, lower-additive alternatives while avoiding harmful ingredients.
