Mohs surgery result: restoring function and natural facial anatomy.

This patient was treated by Dr. Weyer, Board-Certified Dermatologist and Fellowship-Trained Mohs Surgeon, for a basal cell carcinoma (BCC) on the right alar groove (the crease on the side of the nose).

What is basal cell carcinoma?
BCC is the most common type of skin cancer. It typically grows slowly and often appears as a spot that does not heal, a scaly patch, or a pearly bump. While it rarely spreads, it can continue to grow and damage nearby skin and structures if left untreated.

This week’s follow up visit turned into something really special. 💕

The patient featured in the March 2026 International Journal of Dermatology “Surgical Pearls” article asked Dr. Weyer to sign the journal cover she printed and brought with her. He was truly touched by the gesture.

The publication features DPSAZ physicians Dr. Christopher Weyer and Dr. Marco Swanson and shares a three-stage repair of a complex full thickness alar rim defect, with technique focused on supporting the rim and maintaining airflow. Dr. Swanson’s medical illustrations guide readers through each stage of reconstruction and highlight how thoughtful planning supports both functional and cosmetic outcomes.
