In any relationship—whether between parent and child, partners, or friends—two elements are especially powerful: criticism and praise. These can either strengthen or weaken a bond, depending on how they’re expressed.
This principle applies to all relationships. In a marriage, for instance, the idea of saha-dharma-charis—equal partners—highlights the importance of mutual respect. Communication rooted in friendship and equality fosters a stronger bond.
The Yoga Sutras emphasize measured speech. Ask yourself before speaking: Is it necessary? Is this the right time? Will it help? If not, silence may be wiser. Regret often follows impulsive words.
True yoga practice brings shanti—peace—which reflects in our speech and strengthens all relationships. We begin to notice and uplift the good in others, not out of flattery, but genuine recognition. Everyone has something worth appreciating.
When we consciously cultivate gratitude and speak with care, we nourish our relationships. Clear thinking leads to kind speech, and kind speech leads to strong, meaningful connections.
