What Do We Wish People Knew About Pain Management?

It’s not just about medication.

True pain management is about identifying the root cause of your pain—and treating it directly. That means proper diagnosis, understanding what’s actually happening in your body, and using advanced, targeted interventions to restore function and reduce pain at its source.

Medication may play a role, but it’s rarely the full solution.

We also wish more people knew when to seek help. If you’ve just had an acute injury—a fall, a strain, something new—your body often needs time to heal. But if weeks go by and the pain isn’t improving… or it’s getting worse… that’s a sign something deeper may be going on.

That’s when it’s time to see a pain specialist.

Because the sooner you understand the problem, the better your outcome.

Meet Dr. Coury!
Founder of Desert Sky Spine & Pain, Dr. Coury built his practice around a simple belief: pain management should be about more than just relief—it should restore function (hence our tagline - Focused on Function).

Born and raised in Mesa, Arizona, Dr. Coury’s path took him from the University of San Diego (where he graduated with honors in Biology) to osteopathic medical training in Kirksville, Missouri, followed by residency at the University of Kentucky in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, and a fellowship in Interventional Physiatry in Scottsdale.

In 2010, he founded Desert Sky with a clear mission—to help patients get back to the activities they enjoy with the people they love.

Whether that means returning to work, playing with their kids, or enjoying their hobbies, Dr. Coury focuses on what matters most: function, movement, and quality of life.

Outside the clinic, he lives that same philosophy. He's an avid triathlete, pilot, and father of seven.

Meet Dr. Bhola!
Dr. Bhola chose pain management for one simple reason: it allows him to be hands-on in helping patients truly get their lives back.

From minimally invasive injections and radiofrequency ablation (RFA) to advanced procedures like spinal cord stimulation, kyphoplasty, interspinous spacers, and SI joint fusions, Dr. Bhola offers a full spectrum of solutions tailored to each patient.

He takes the time to listen, understand, and walk patients through their options—building individualized treatment plans that empower them to make informed decisions about their care.

His goal is always to help patients get moving again—and stay moving.

As he often says, “Motion is lotion.”

The more we move, the more we support our body’s ability to heal, function, and live well.

An appreciation spotlight with Dr. Coury:

Just wrapped up my first spinal cord stimulator (SCS) trial with Jennifer Shelton as the clinical specialist—and I couldn’t help but reflect on the journey that brought us here.
Jen started with us back in October 2018 as a radiologic technologist. Since then, she’s worn nearly every hat imaginable: personal assistant, office manager, operations leader, and even oversaw much of the remodeling at our Oracle building.
She went on to serve in interventional radiology at St. Joseph’s, helping deliver life-saving vascular procedures, and now works as a clinical specialist with Medtronic—continuing to grow, serve, and lead with excellence.
From X-ray tech to administrative leadership to clinical expert, Jen’s career path is a reminder of what’s possible when skill meets grit and grace.
Grateful to have worked alongside her—and even more excited to see where she goes next.
