My precious daughter is so intelligent that I sometimes forget she is only 3 years old. While pushing her to be independent and confident, I sometimes find myself setting expectations that she is not developmentally ready to meet.

Going potty, for example, was turning into a painstakingly slow, defiant and adversarial event. When asked to use the potty independently she will forget to wipe, flush etc and then fib to us about it only for us to find a nice surprise later. When I joined her in the potty, I would be frustrated by her slow pace and lack of focus.

I turned to a good friend for advise who reminded me she likely still needs more support. I implemented the strategies below and our potty time has become much more pleasant and time efficient, and I still feel like I am fostering her independence. I hope this helps for anyone in this phase!

Be Present: While she is capable of going to the bathroom on her own, she is rarely able to complete all the steps on her own in a time efficient manner. She forgets steps, wants to rush back to play or just gets distracted by bath toys. I realized she is not quite ready for bathroom privacy and still needs some coaching.

Visual Prompts: We posted the pictured sign in the bathroom. I explained it to my daughter and she was able to explain it back to me. Now, instead of me telling her what to do, I can simply ask, "what's next?" She can take a look at her sign and execute on her own. Then I get to praise her! Sometimes she even checks her sign without prompting which is helping her gain bathroom independence.

Time Challenges: She wants to do everything by herself like a big girl, but sometimes we are moving at the pace of molasses. Luckily, she loves a good time challenge. Phrases such as, "do you think you can finish wiping before I count to 10?" and "I'm going to flush before you do..." all get her moving! And when she beats me/the clock to the task she is all smiles.

We are doing a lot of tummy time at the Oatmen house! Not only is it good for the baby, but its a great way for my older daughter to be involved and bond with her baby sister.

What is tummy time? It's simply placing your baby on their stomach while they're awake and supervised. Make it fun and engaging with chatting, singing, toys, music and mirrors. A firm flat surface is best, but even time on your chest can be beneficial.

You can start tummy time as early as a few days old! Begin with short bursts (3-5 minutes) several times a day. Aim for at least 30 minutes total by the time they are 3-4 months old. Even short, frequent sessions add up!

Why is it SO Important? Tummy time builds the neck, shoulder, and back muscles needed for rolling, sitting, crawling, and eventually walking. It also helps develop coordination and body awareness, prevent flat spots on the head, and boosts sensory development.

Enjoy this play time with your baby, you might even get a few smiles!

Our little man is officially in his hitting phase and the time outs have begun!

Two-year-olds are wonderful, but their little brains are hardwired for exploring, testing boundaries, and having BIG feelings. They do not have the mental capacity to reflect on their actions, therefore a timeout is a simple tool to help reset your toddler and stop unwanted behaviors.

Here's the "anatomy" of an effective toddler timeout:

Phase 1: Clear & Calm Delivery
When a misbehavior happens, briefly state the rule and consequence. For example: "No hitting. You need a time-out." Take them immediately to the time-out spot.

Phase 2: The "Boring" Time Out Location
Good examples are a chair in a hallway, a designated step, or a corner of a room without toys or screens. A good rule of thumb is 1 minute per year of age. Set a timer! If they get up, calmly return them to the spot and restart the timer without talking. Ignore the Tantrum! During the time-out, give them zero attention. Even negative attention is a win for your toddler!

Phase 3: The End & The Reconnect
When the timer goes off, the time-out is over. Get back to your warm, positive interactions right away! The goal is to reinforce that they get your best attention when they are not misbehaving.

Good luck out there to all of you in the thick of the toddler years, I'm right there with you!

Infant RSV vaccines are here at Casa's Pediatrics!

RSV is a respiratory virus that is most prevalent October through March. For most of us, RSV only causes a cold. For young children, especially babies, it can be more dangerous. RSV is among the leading causes of hospitalization for young infants. Babies can get cold symptoms like cough, congestion, and fever. They may also get a condition called bronchiolitis where the virus moves to the lungs and causes difficulty breathing.

Thankfully, there is now a vaccine to help protect babies 0-8 months old entering their first RSV season. If you think your baby is eligible for the RSV vaccine, give our office a call to schedule! If you're a new mama and you received the maternal RSV vaccine at the end of your pregnancy, then your babe is protected as well :)

Remember, exposure to germs and contracting illnesses are inevitable and normal parts of life. It even helps boost your kiddos immune system! But, at Casas Peds we are here to help you navigate this respiratory season from vaccines to sick visits.

Also, note that you can now schedule your kiddo’s flu vaccine on the MyChart app. Hopefully more online scheduling options to come soon!

Please enjoy this picture of my daughter when she had RSV as a baby, before and after she was sick, but smiling the entire time!

Are all red eyes "pink eye"? No! A very common cause of a red, swollen eye is a stye. A stye is a blockage of a gland in the upper or lower eye lid. It can appear on the outside of the lid, or the inside of the lid. It often shows up overnight as a red, swollen, and sometimes painful area on the eyelid. The first day or two the lid may look generally swollen. By day three, the redness and swelling localizes to a red, rubbery nodule on the lid. The white of the eye looks normal and there is no discharge. We treat styes with warm compresses three times daily. Antibiotics are not needed. If they are not painful we can give them 2 months to go away! If they are painful, then we only wait 2 weeks before referral to an ophthalmologist.

When should you call the office? If you're not sure its a stye. If the white of the eye is red or there is discharge/crusting it may be "pink eye." If the lid is very swollen or BOTH lids are swollen it may be an infection of the skin around the eye. This needs antibiotics right away.

Hope this helps decipher all the red/swollen eyes your kiddos come home with this school year. Here are some pictures of styes and some silly pictures of my kiddos :)

Have your kiddos been a little backed up? Constipation is one of the most common concerns I discuss with families in clinic. If your child is not having at least 3-4 soft, easy to pass bowel movements a week they may be constipated. Other symptoms can include blood with bowel movements, abdominal pain, and urinary accidents.

There are some medical conditions that cause constipation. However, most constipation in kids is "functional constipation" which is much more behavioral or diet related.

Babies and children can develop functional constipation when they change formulas, start solids, have a diet low in fiber and high in starchy foods, have a change in routine, or are toilet training.

Here are some things you can try at home to get things moving!
-High fiber foods: think berries, whole grains, leafy greens and legumes. For babies, adding a tsp of ground flaxseed to purees or cereals can add great fiber.
-Water and Juice: Increase water and have your kiddo carry a water bottle. Daily or as needed "P" juices such as apple, pear, prune, and pineapple can get things moving. Most babies less than 9 months old should not be getting regular water or juice. HOWEVER, 2-4 ounces of water or juice daily for babies as young as 4 months old can help significantly with constipation
-Regular exercise: Daily activity is vital!

If these aren't working, or your baby has constipation in the first few weeks of life, then come into the office and we can chat more. We will decide if we need to look for any underlying medical conditions causing and/or start medications to keep your kiddo regular.
