Arizona Measles Update:

Arizona health officials have identified multiple measles exposure locations in the East Valley, including Mesa, Gilbert, and Queen Creek. Because these cases are connected, community transmission is considered likely.

Measles is extremely contagious and can spread through the air for up to 2 hours after an infected person leaves an area. Symptoms typically begin with:
• Fever
• Cough
• Runny nose
• Red/watery eyes
• Followed by a rash that spreads from the face downward

The MMR vaccine remains the best protection against measles.

⚠️ Important infant update:
The CDC and Arizona health officials recommend that babies ages 6–12 months living in Maricopa County receive an early MMR vaccine dose. Infants 6–12 months who will be traveling to Maricopa County during this outbreak period may consider early vaccination as well.

📍 Known exposure locations:

• The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mesa) — April 19
• AZ Athletic Grounds Building A (Mesa) — April 23
• Menchie’s Frozen Yogurt (Mesa) — April 25
• Fry’s Food Store (Mesa) — April 28
• V’s Barbershop (Mesa) — April 28
• Target (Mesa) — April 29
• Boba CuCue Bubble Tea House (Mesa) — April 29
• Chili’s Grill & Bar (Mesa) — April 29
• Chick-fil-A (Mesa) — April 29 & 30
• In-N-Out Burger (Mesa) — May 3
• Starbound Dance Competition (Gilbert) — May 2
• Walgreens (Queen Creek) — May 4
• Hobby Lobby (Queen Creek) — May 4

Anyone who visited these locations during the listed times should monitor for symptoms for up to 21 days after exposure. If symptoms develop, call your healthcare provider before arriving so precautions can be taken to prevent further spread.

Happy Nurses Appreciation Week to the amazing nursing staff at Tanque Verde Pediatrics 🤍🩺

Our nurses are often the first friendly voice families hear on the phone, the ones thoughtfully responding to portal messages throughout the day, and the calm presence helping guide families through tough moments.

They give shots with love and care, reward brave kids with stickers and encouragement, draw labs for little ones with skill, and work side-by-side with our providers to keep the clinic running smoothly every day.

Behind the scenes, they do even more - stocking supplies, jumping in wherever needed, and even tending to the flowers out front that help make our office feel warm and welcoming 🌸

Their compassion, patience, teamwork, and dedication never go unnoticed. We are endlessly grateful for everything they do for our patients, families, and team.

Please help us celebrate our incredible nurses this week! 👏✨

Measles Update in Arizona

We want to keep our families informed about a recent measles exposure reported in Queen Creek, Arizona (Maricopa County). Public health officials have identified a confirmed case with potential community exposure, and individuals who were at identified locations during specific time frames may have been exposed.

What does this mean for Tucson/Pima County?
At this time, there are no confirmed measles cases or outbreaks in Pima County, and our immunization recommendations at Tanque Verde Pediatrics have not changed. This is different from Maricopa County, where guidance may be adjusted based on local exposure risk.

What to watch for:
Measles symptoms typically appear 7–14 days after exposure (but can occur up to 21 days). Early symptoms include:
• High fever
• Cough
• Runny nose
• Red, watery eyes

A few days later, a rash develops (starting on the face and spreading downward), often accompanied by worsening fever.

What to do:
If your child may have been exposed or develops symptoms, please call our office before coming in so we can help guide next steps and prevent further spread.

Staying up to date on the MMR vaccine remains the best protection against measles.
