Constructed during 2016, the Otter Creek Island Restoration Project built a 1,900-foot side channel, installed 20 log jams, and placed 25,000 cubic yards of excavated river-bed material to form a gravel nourishment bar. The restoration actions continue to provide complex rearing and productive spawning habitat to benefit salmon and steelhead populations in the Cowlitz River. This is one of the many restoration efforts lead by the Cowlitz Indian Tribe's Natural Resources Department.

"The Cowlitz Indian Tribe has fought for generations to uplift our people and overcome the evils of discrimination.
Today, we stand in unity with all people who face racism.
We are all one and we cannot stand by while the community is hurting. We must all come together to speak out against injustice and work together to heal our country. The Cowlitz Indian Tribe calls for social justice for everyone in our Country to be treated with respect and dignity. Indigenous and Black struggles have been interwoven over the past 500 years, but our oppressions are not the same. Our land was stolen from us; they were stolen from their land. We acknowledge the pain that our Black relatives have endured and continue to endure. We call upon fellow Tribal Nations, partners of the Cowlitz Tribe, Native and Non-native, white to stand in solidarity to end the social injustice and evils of discrimination and work for healing amongst all people in this difficult time of challenge."

- Bill Iyall, Chairman of Cowlitz Indian Tribe
