I saw someone posted the other day asking about migraines and how to manage themβ¦ thereβs A LOT that goes into it but let me share what Iβve learned. This is for that person (sorry I canβt remember who it was) and anyone else wanting to know. ππ€―β€οΈ
Youβve got to know your triggers. This can be specific foods, stress, sleep disturbances, exercise, hormone changes, weather changes, dehydration, allergies, smells, etc. What things in your environment cause you to have a migraine? Once you have identified them, try to avoid as much as possible.
You need to keep the same sleep/wake schedule everyday, even weekends. Your wake schedule is slightly more important than when you fall asleep but try as best you can to stay consistent with both.
Hydration is extremely important! I believe my neurologist asked if I drink at least 3 liters a day. π€ I think the recommended amount is 1/3 or maybe even 1/2 your body weight in oz (but I could be wrong). I make sure to add electrolytes to one of my bottles when I start to feel run down or I start to get signs one is coming.
Supplements you can take include vitamin D3, magnesium, omega 3 (fish oil), and CoQ10. Speak with a medical professional first, these are just common ones recommended.
Keep a migraine journal so you can track when theyβre happening, signs or symptoms leading up to the attack (so you can recognize when one is coming), symptoms accompanying your head pain, duration, and what helped best to relieve it.
I personally love migraine caps. I keep mine in the freezer.
Anti-inflammatory diet may help. I personally am a veggie but I try and eat a Mediterranean style diet most of the time. Green smoothies which include celery, kale, pineapple, banana, ginger, and cucumber could potentially help also.
Find a stress relieving technique that works best for you. Yoga, meditation, Thai chi, Qigong, prayer, pranayama (breathing exercises), etc. Stress management is also extremely important so find what works for you and put it into practice. ππ»
Massage therapy can also help. Try and find a therapist who has experience with migraine management. Specific knots in specific muscles refer pain to the head. A therapist with migraine management knowledge should know which muscles to work to help elevate some of your pain. ππ»ββοΈ
Drs will prescribe different meds. Find one that works for you. Most of the time I have to just find a cool dark room with my migraine cap and sleep it off. π€·π»ββοΈ
Good luck! π Migraines can be debilitating but hopefully you can get to a place where theyβre manageable. ππ»β€οΈ
