Good morning from Swisher Memorial Healthcare System, and happy Monday! Did you know today is National Banana Bread Day? It’s a great reminder that healthy choices can still be delicious — and if you have some ripe bananas on your counter, it might be the perfect time to bake a loaf to share. Bananas first appeared in the United States around 1870 as a luxury item, and it took a few decades before their baking potential was discovered, eventually turning banana bread into the household favorite we know today. We hope you have a wonderful Monday filled with good health, community, and maybe a slice of banana bread!

Healthy Banana Bread made with simple and wholesome ingredients like Greek yogurt, maple syrup, and olive oil for a healthier twist.

February is National Cancer Prevention Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness about ways we can reduce cancer risk through healthy lifestyle choices and early detection. Research shows that nearly 40–50% of cancer cases and deaths may be preventable, highlighting how small, everyday actions—like maintaining a balanced diet, staying physically active, avoiding to***co, and keeping up with recommended screenings—can make a meaningful difference in long-term health.

At Swisher Memorial Healthcare System, we encourage our community to take proactive steps toward prevention and talk with your healthcare provider about appropriate screenings. Your health matters, and prevention starts with awareness.

An estimated 40 percent of all cancers diagnosed and nearly half of all cancer deaths in the U.S. can be attributed to preventable causes.

Today, we celebrate Abraham Lincoln's Birthday.

Born on this day in 1809, in a single-room log cabin at Sinking Spring Farm in LaRue County, Kentucky, Abraham Lincoln rose from humble beginnings to become the 16th President of the United States. He was the son of Thomas Lincoln, an illiterate pioneer farmer, and Nancy Hanks Lincoln, who passed away when Abraham was just nine years old.

It was his stepmother, Sarah Bush Johnston—also illiterate—who recognized young Abraham’s uncommon natural talents and encouraged his love of reading and learning. Her belief in him helped shape a leader whose words, integrity, and perseverance still inspire generations today.

A powerful reminder that potential isn’t defined by where you start—but by those who encourage you to grow.

Did you know? On this day in 1752, Pennsylvania Hospital opened its doors as the first hospital in the American colonies. Founded in 1751 by Dr. Thomas Bond and Benjamin Franklin, the hospital initially operated out of a temporary rented house on Market Street in Philadelphia, providing care for the sick-poor and individuals with mental illness.

More than 270 years later, that early commitment to compassionate, accessible care still inspires healthcare systems like ours today.
