UnitedHealthcare Medicare Advantage HMO's now REQUIRE a referral from your primary physician to see a specialist. This includes the very popular AARP Medicare Advantage HMO plan as well. It does not matter if you have been seeing the same specialist for 20 years, you MUST have a referral. It does not matter if your specialist is in network with your plan, you MUST have a referral. Your referral is only good for 6 months, so it must be renewed every 6 months.
