This month, we have explored how nursing has been profoundly shaped by the strength, skill, and vision of Black nurses. To conclude our series, the Oklahoma Nurses Association is proud to highlight a leader who is quite literally building the infrastructure for the next generation of Oklahoma caregivers.

Meet Wendy Williams, MPH, MSN—Executive Director of the Miss Weary Foundation and a true champion of nursing education.

Wendy’s resume reads like a roadmap of healthcare leadership, with impactful roles at the University of Chicago Hospital, the VA, and Langston University. In 2009, her talent for instruction was recognized when she was named Teacher of the Year at Tulsa Technology Center.

In 2017, Wendy took her passion for workforce development to the next level by founding the Miss Weary Foundation. As Executive Director, she oversees the Health and Safety Education Training Center, providing vital certification programs for CNAs, CMAs, and Practical Nursing students across Tulsa. By creating these pathways, she is directly addressing healthcare disparities and providing economic opportunities within her community.

A pillar of local leadership, Wendy founded and served as President of the Eastern Oklahoma Black Nurses Association, Inc. and is a Lifetime Member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Her accolades include the YWCA Pinnacle Award and the Frankie Muse Freeman Community Service Award.

Professional and Opportunities

Message from the owner Wendy Williams, RN, MS, MPH--

Health and Safety Education Consultants Training Center, LLC was morphed out of its first operating business Health and Safety Education Consultants (HSEC), Anew Direction, LLC. The original business was founded in 2016 by two Registered Nurses who had a vision to impact the healthcare community through quality training. The business was started after many years of educating nursing students and working in Tulsa’s Healthcare industry. Today, I have branched off to form HSECTC with a plan to continue to grow and expand business.

My goal as a business is to impact our growing healthcare industry in a way that has never been seen in Tulsa. My educational background began in New Orleans, LA where I completed undergraduate nursing school receiving my Bachelors of Nursing. It was here where I learned the art of nursing. Upon moving to Tulsa in January of 1989, I began my work as a professional nurse. It is here in Tulsa where I have progressed from a novice nurse to an expert in nursing. My passion to care for others has grown beyond my most unimaginable dreams. It is here in Oklahoma where I obtained graduate degrees in the area of health. My first advance degree obtained was a Masters in Public Health, 1995 and later obtained a Masters in Nursing Education, 2008.

As a nurse in the community, my experiences have crossed many settings, beginning with in-patient care at Doctor’s Hospital to other local hospitals. I have also worked for Tulsa City –County Health Department, Veterans Administration, Morton Comprehensive Health Services and Tulsa Public Schools. My teaching experience was gained through several years of teaching adjunct and full time for Tulsa Technology Center. The classes taught included Licensed Practical Nursing full-time and all other allied health careers as adjunct. My teaching experience also includes Langston University SON and Brown Mackie College SON; both schools of nursing were for registered nurse students. My professional affiliations include; Founder of Eastern Oklahoma Black Nurses Association, Lifetime Member of the National Black Nurses Association, America Heart Association Board of Directors, member 2017- Present, American Heart Association Ambassador for The Power to End Stroke Program, 2009 – Present. I have published as co-author in the American Journal of Public Health and Journal of Cultural Diversity: An Interdisciplinary Journal, both in the area genomic testing.
