Ahh, now that’s better ;)

With all the buzz around the new USA food pyramid guidelines, we decided to make our own!

This is the GAPS Diet–inspired food pyramid, centered around the foods that truly support gut healing and overall health across the different stages and spectrums of the GAPS Nutritional Protocol. At the foundation are animal foods and fats, and meat stock - the building blocks of the body. This includes quality animal meats (don't leave out the skin and nibbly bits of soft joint cartilage), fish, organ meats, eggs, animal fats, full-fat fermented dairy (kefir, sour cream, yogurt, and creme fraiche), ghee, butter, olive oil, and nourishing soups, stews, and casseroles. Foods are delicately seasoned with herbs, peppercorns, and rock salt.

In the early stages, the GAPS Diet focuses on well-cooked vegetables (as tolerated), gradually expanding to include eggs, avocado, and fermented foods like beet kvass, cabbage tonic, sauerkraut, fermented full-fat dairy, freshly dripped whey, and aged cheeses. Ginger tea with raw honey and other herbal, non-caffeinated teas are recommended along with freshly pressed juices as the base of GAPS milkshakes and smoothies. Honey is the primary natural sweetener on GAPS.

As the gut heals, more variety can be added in moderation and as tolerated, like raw and dried fruits, raw vegetables, along with properly prepared nuts and seeds that are soaked, sprouted, and fermented to support optimal digestion and absorption.

Repairing the gut is about simplicity, nourishment, and honoring how the body was designed to be fed. The GAPS Diet and our new food pyramid respects the unique healing path of every person - no matter where they begin their journey to recovery!

Foundational: Knowing HOW the body works with regard to toxin elimination puts us in a better position to navigate “illness”, or, as it would be more accurately referred to, the healing efforts of the body.

Additionally, when you understand that what the medical world calls “symptoms” are the body’s built-in mechanisms for toxin removal BY DESIGN, you can actually be GRATEFUL that your body is working as it should. And when you think it though, suppressing symptoms (suppressing fever, inflammation, mucus production, etc.) is like disconnecting a blaring smoke detector. Just let the “symptoms” do their job and support the body through the process.

The GAPS Diet is a gut healing protocol that eliminates foods that irritate the gut lining and harm the gut microbiome while providing the body that which it needs to rebuild and heal resulting in the restoration of the cellular structure of the gut lining and repopulation of the gut microbiome with a diverse, thriving beneficial bacterial community.

Grains are not used during the healing process. But once healed, grains that have been adequately fermented, like sourdough bread, are usually well tolerated and delicious, especially when loaded with raw grass fed butter, herbed tallow, and/or avocado + mineral salt!

My hobby, love language, super power:

Presenting Loaded Baked Potato Soup - but no potatoes (carb, starch, not a GAPS food), no bacon (beef instead = biblically clean). This recipe includes gut healing chicken stock, cauliflower, onion, beef “bacon” bits (homemade…it’s all in the seasonings & cooking technique), and probiotic crème fraiche.

I love to take delicious recipes and modify them to make them GAPS-friendly and biblically clean. The other day I made a “sausage” casserole. To pull it off, I simply seasoned my beef as if I were making sausage from scratch. Endless possibilities. Happiness. Healthy gut. 🥰
