I found this great site that honors and remembers fallen officers in the line of duty. They have a day in history page - check it out! I will be sharing their stories and helping to add more details and accuracy in the stories on the website as I research these fallen officers. You can also search your law enforcement ancestors who were killed - not there? You can send them details to have them added.

74 law enforcement officers have been killed in the line of duty on this date.

Interesting history!

in 1909, a reported 250,000 mourners filled New York’s streets for the funeral of Joseph Petrosino, the NYPD detective assassinated in Sicily. Known as the “Italian Sherlock Holmes,” Petrosino led the fight against the Black Hand, a secret society extorting Italian immigrants. While on an overseas mission to gather intelligence on Italian criminals, he was ambushed and killed. His murder was never solved, but his relentless pursuit of justice made him a pioneer in the fight against organized crime.
