Hey Tulsa parents!
If you’re waiting to see an IBCLC or just need a little extra breastfeeding support, here’s a great local option. 💛

Our friend Taryn Starkey () is a certified lactation counselor (CLC), birth doula, and postpartum doula with years of experience supporting families. She’s offering low-cost breastfeeding consultations to help with latch checks, ni**le pain, pumping plans, and all those early-feeding questions.

The best part? If something looks outside her scope, she’ll collaborate directly with your IBCLC (like us!) to make sure you get the care you need. That’s what real continuity of care looks like.

We are so excited to be sponsors for this event and we will be there this Saturday, October 18th at RSU! We will be raffling off a prenatal visit (worth $100). You can also apply this as $100 off a lactation visit as well. We will have several popular pumps and other equipment available for you to look at for your registry, and we will have a scale for you to weigh your baby. And we will do a little learning activity about latching. Plus a sweet little goodie for saying hello! Hope to see you there!

I mean it can’t hurt? Right? 🤣

Love this! Everyone deserves lactation support!

Today marks the start of the first ever Deaf & Hard of Hearing Breastfeeding Week! As an allied partner with the Deaf community, the DC Breastfeeding Coalition fostered the initiation of the first-ever Deaf and Hard of Hearing Breastfeeding Collective. The theme for this first-of-its-kind observance is "Close the Gap Bridge the Divide: Establish Breastfeeding Support Access."

The purpose of this initiative is to provide the nation's marginalized and underrepresented Deaf community with accessible breastfeeding education, support, and community, because language and breastfeeding access matters from birth! Follow Deaf & Hard of Hearing Breastfeeding to keep up with the observance's activities.

Good lactation support before jumping to a frenotomy matters! Plenty of providers rush to referrals or surgery when they don’t have solid feeding knowledge. A skilled IBCLC evaluation can uncover whether positioning, tongue mobility, or latch mechanics (not just anatomy) are the real issue.

Some professionals offer ‘feeding support’ mainly as a way to market their services, and not all invest in ongoing lactation education or evidence-based care. You deserve more than that.

And while bodywork, chiropractic, or other therapies can sometimes support feeding, they don’t replace a thorough, evidence-based lactation assessment.

Evidence and consensus guidelines recommend assessing infant feeding first, ruling out contributing factors, and considering frenectomy only if an experienced assessment shows it’s needed. Don’t hesitate to ask: “How do you assess feeding? Have you ruled out other causes? What research supports this referral?”

High-quality care starts with good questions and with providers who truly value skilled lactation support, not just the easy referral loop or the frenectomy. This post is for general education, not medical advice. It isn’t directed at any individual provider or case. Always discuss your own situation with a qualified lactation consultant or healthcare professional.
