Understanding and meeting our sensory needs is so important for neurodivergent folks. It can help us accommodate and take better care of ourselves. It can help us understand why some situations feel so overwhelming. It can give us language to describe our experience.

It’s day 2 at the Stanford Neurodiversity Summit. This is my second year attending this conference and I love having the opportunity to come and learn more things to help me provide better care for my neurodivergent clients, and up to date information to other clinicians through my trainings!

Thursday is the day! I’ll be teaching on ways to understand and support Autistic and ADHD clients from a neurodivergent affirming lived experience perspective. That’s a lot of formal words to say I want to help therapists understand how the neurodivergent brains can work, and how to help clients navigate life with the brain they have in a self compassionate way! And I’m AuDHD myself, so I come with lived experience. Here’s the link to sign up: https://ptgcollective.com/product/understanding-and-supporting-autistic-and-adhd-clients/

Noticing what the signs of burnout are for you is such an important step. When we don’t notice that burnout is building, we can push ourselves way too far and make recovery a more difficult process. Here are some of the signs I’ve learned to look out for, what are some your signs that burnout is approaching?

2 years ago this month I took a leap and started my own practice. I didn’t know at the time what this journey would look like, but am so grateful I made the leap. Over the last 2 years I’ve gotten to do a deep dive into working with Autistic and ADHD adults and love the work I get to do so much! Lives have been changed over these last 2 years, my own included. I am honored to get to walk alongside my clients as they learn to understand, support, and advocate for themselves. I truly love the work I do and look forward to many more years of walking alongside my fellow Autistic and ADHDers as we move towards thriving, not just surviving.

When leaving my office there’s one final takeaway after every session, the way you speak to yourself matters. This is a reminder I need often! We sometimes think bullying ourselves into healing, growing, or achieving is the way. It’s not. When we instead start being kind to ourselves, speaking to ourselves in the way we would speak to friends or loved ones, it helps us feel safe with ourselves. It gives us the room to stumble through the healing and growth process, because let’s be real, there’s going to be some stumbling involved. You’re not going to get it perfect the first time, in fact you may have to try for a while before figuring out what you need. But if you can practice speaking to yourself in a healthier way, it makes the whole process much quicker and easier.
