Flu season kicked off in October when annual spread picks up, but it’s not too late to get a flu shot! And what better time than National Influenza Vaccination Week, December 1-5? While it doesn’t completely eliminate your chance of catching the flu, a flu shot helps prevent serious illness from the disease, which sends hundreds of thousands of people to the hospital yearly, according to CDC estimates. The flu can be especially dangerous to those with increased risk of complications from it, including young children, seniors 65 and older, and people with certain chronic medical conditions.

As the days get shorter and the temperatures colder, some people may notice their mental health is impacted. Seasonal affective disorder is a type of depression that crops up on a seasonal basis and can last for 4-5 months, according to the National Institute of Mental Health. Take note of changes in your sleeping and eating patterns, increased irritability, and/or
feeling socially withdrawn, and seek help from a healthcare professional if needed.

Hispanic Heritage Month is going strong! This month of Hispanic celebration and pride kicked off September 15, the anniversary of independence for Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Hondura, and Nicaragua, to celebrate the rich cultures and contributions of Americans of Spanish, Mexican, Caribbean, and Central, and South American descent. Other Latin American countries celebrating their independence during this month include Mexico on September 16 and Chile on the 18th.
