💙 Know the Facts: Understanding Early Signs of Autism Spectrum Disorder

Early recognition and support can make a world of difference. At OU Health Physicians in Tulsa, our Developmental-Behavioral Pediatrics team helps families navigate developmental concerns with compassion and expertise.

3 Things Every Parent Should Know:

1️⃣ Trust Your Gut
You know your child best. If you notice changes in language, social skills, or behavior, listen to your instincts and ask questions early.

2️⃣ Recognize the Signs
Early signs can include:
👀 limited eye contact
🗣️ delayed speech
🚫 not responding to their name
🤲 repetitive movements (like hand flapping or rocking)
🎯 strong interests or routines
Every child is unique, but noticing patterns early helps guide next steps.

3️⃣ Take Action Early
If you’re concerned, talk with your child’s doctor or reach out for a developmental screening. Early evaluation and support can help children learn and grow to their fullest potential.

💡 Remember: Autism isn’t something “wrong,” it’s simply a different way of experiencing the world. Children with autism have incredible strengths, talents, and perspectives that enrich us all.

💙 Some children may need extra support in certain areas, but every child brings something special to the table and has something we can all learn from.

💙 The Developmental-Behavioral Pediatrics team at OU Health Physicians in Tulsa provides expert assessment, diagnosis, and care coordination for children with autism and other developmental or behavioral concerns.

🌟Serving with a Passion; Meet Dr. Sumner

Licensed Psychologist | OU Health Physicians in Tulsa

With nearly 20 years of experience serving Tulsa families, Dr. Sumner brings both expertise and heart to her work. Specializing in comprehensive neuropsychological assessments, she helps families better understand their child’s strengths and challenges — empowering them to advocate for the supports and services their child deserves.

❤️ “I love what I do and I live what I do.”
That’s the passion Dr. Sumner brings to every family she meets.

After earning her doctoral degree in School Psychology at OSU, Dr. Sumner completed her internship at Primary Children’s Hospital in Salt Lake City under a neuropsychologist before returning home to Tulsa. She began her career in the local school system and has now spent 19½ years with OU Pediatrics, dedicated to compassionate, comprehensive care.

🌟Passion with a Purpose: Meet Dr. Sickler

Developmental-Behavioral Pediatrician | OU Health Physicians in Tulsa

Every child is unique — and that’s exactly how Dr. Sickler approaches care. As a Developmental-Behavioral Pediatrician, she helps children and families navigate developmental delays, ADHD, autism, learning differences, and behavior challenges.

Known for her collaborative approach, Dr. Sickler works closely with families, schools, and therapists to build on each child’s strengths and create a path for growth and success.

Originally from North Dakota, Dr. Sickler’s journey was inspired by her mom, a Child Development Specialist who sparked her passion for helping kids thrive. After completing medical school at OSU and residency at OU-Tulsa, she’s excited to return to Tulsa to help launch the Developmental-Behavioral Pediatrics team, calling it “a true homecoming.”

When she’s not caring for families, you’ll find her outdoors (when it’s not too hot 😅) with friends and family, traveling, exploring Tulsa’s best patios, or cooking and baking for friends and family.

💬 “Collaborative” is the word Dr. Sickler uses to describe OU Health Physicians in Tulsa, because teamwork truly makes a difference in helping children reach their fullest potential.
