After more than four years of clinical trials at Oklahoma Heart Institute (OHI), a landscape-changing heart procedure is now allowing providers to treat patients with mitral heart valve disease without surgery. Dr. Kamran Muhammad, interventional cardiologist at OHI, recently performed the first commercial Sapien M3 transcatheter mitral valve replacement and sat down with KOTV - News On 6 to talk about it. He explains why this non-surgical option is a total game-changer for treating valve disease and how Oklahomans played a part in getting this technology approved.

A big congratulations to Dr. Muhammad and his team for being third in the nation to perform this procedure commercially.

History was made in Tulsa early this week! Oklahoma Heart Institute (OHI) just performed one of the first commercial Edwards Sapien M3 transcatheter mitral valve replacement procedures in the United States, following its FDA approval last week. Thanks to this new technology, we're able to treat heart valve disease without traditional surgery, which is often considered too dangerous. OHI performed the third commercial procedure in the entire nation and the very first in our region, marking a major milestone for cardiac care in Oklahoma.

Our team has been performing this procedure using the Sapien M3 valve system as part of a major clinical trial since 2021, and we're the number one global enroller for that trial. It was the participation of Oklahomans that helped get this cutting-edge technology approved for patients nationwide and worldwide. We are honored to continue leading the way and bringing the future of heart health to our neighbors first.

Oklahoma Heart Institute’s structural heart team enrolled more patients than any other site in the world in the ENCIRCLE Trial. The positive one-year outcomes from this major trial were presented recently at this year’s Transcatheter Cardiovascular Therapeutics (TCT) annual meeting in San Francisco and published in The Lancet, a renowned medical journal.

This trial tested the Edwards Sapien M3: the world’s first fully non-surgical transcatheter mitral valve replacement (TMVR) system for patients with severe mitral regurgitation who aren't good candidates for other treatments. Dr. Kamran Muhammad, interventional cardiologist at OHI, has trained physicians in using this exciting new technology in Spain, Switzerland, Germany, Poland and around the United States. We're proud to lead the way in innovation and research, and we will continue to use this technology to help patients at OHI and around the world!

Hillcrest was proud to sponsor the Youth Medical Mentorship's Fall Sports Medicine Youth Summit! Around 200 students spent the day at Union High School with 16 community partners and dozens of volunteers, gaining hands-on experience with medical professionals.

Our team members from Hillcrest South, Oklahoma Heart Institute and Utica Park Clinic led the CPR/AED station, where students practiced CPR techniques, learned how to use an AED and observed the heart in real time through ultrasound imaging. We're always grateful for the opportunity to help encourage young minds and inspire them to pursue meaningful careers in medicine!
