GRANDPARENTS DAY!

National Grandparents' Day came about due to the efforts of two people:

JACOB REINGOLD

In 1961, Jacob Reingold, the executive vice president of Hebrew Home of Riverdale (a care home for older adults), attended a conference on aging in the White House.

Driven by what he heard, he sought to do something to honor all grandparents: a special day. This was first celebrated in the Hebrew Home in September 1961. On January 27, 1987, Mario Biaggi, a member of The House of Representatives, remarked for the record a “Tribute to Jacob Reingold, pioneer in efforts to gain national recognition for grandparents”.

RETIRING? A CHANCE TO REFIRE YOUR LIFE!

Choosing a different path after retiring from one career can fill your life with more purpose and passion. Continuing to be active doing something you love can lengthen your life, improve your mental and physical health, create more social interaction, and much more.

And for many people, that new path can go in a totally different direction from what you may have done before. One Tulsan quit a long career in photography to take a position in the maintenance department of a grocery store, because of his love of gardening. Another used the skills he learned as a financial expert to become a mentor to veterans starting over after legal difficulties, as well as helping veterans with financial challenges get better rates with creditors.

Looking for ideas for a new career? First, tap into your personal and professional networks. You can contact Tulsa Community WorkAdvance, Oklahoma Works Job Center, or the AARP Foundation Senior Community Service Employment Program. through their website.

THIS DAY IN HISTORY: THE SANDWICH!

The "Earl of Sandwich" refers to John Montagu, the 4th Earl of Sandwich, a British statesman who lived in the 18th century. He is credited with popularizing the sandwich as a meal by reportedly having food placed between slices of bread so he could eat while gambling. While he didn't invent the concept of putting food between bread, his name became associated with it. The Earl of Sandwich restaurant chain is named in his honor.

STAFF SPOTLIGHT: GERALD THOMPSON

Gerald Thompson , Funeral Director at Moore's, Southlawn, joined the Moore family in March, 2025.

A native of Okmulgee, Oklahoma, Gerald graduated from Okmulgee High School in 1989. After attending Oklahoma State University, he began his career in the funeral industry, first as a funeral director's assistant in Okmulgee, and then later in Henryetta. He went on to receive his degree in mortuary science in 2023 from the Dallas Institute of Mortuary Science, after working in the industry for much of his career.

According to Gerald, what he enjoys most about working for Moore's is "helping and guiding families through the most difficult time of their lives." He has two children, Jake and Julia, and two grandchildren, Titus and Malachi. Some of his fondest memories of his children's childhoods included attending their performances as members of their school's marching band ; daughter Julia was in the color guard, and son Jake performed in the drum line. As a high school student at Okmulgee High School, he himself was the school mascot for the Okmulgee Bulldogs!

In his spare time, Gerald watches OU football every game he can. He also enjoys fishing, taking lake trips , attending church, and spending time with family. On his future travel wish list is a trip to the Grand Canyon.

After losing a family member to su***de in 2024, one of his personal goals is to increase public awareness of the serious effects of depression, and how to recognize the signs in those who may be needing help, but don't want to ask for it. He shared that "no matter how bad a day you might be having, someone out there is having one much worse." Encourage them to get help. He added: " God has blessed me beyond measure."

Thank you, Gerald, for all you do for our families and in the community!

Our Story

Our family has been taking care of Tulsa's families for a long time. Moores started in Claremore and moved to Tulsa by the courage and vision of a man from New Jersey. Moores has become one of our city's most respected enterprises, embodying the spirit that helped this city become such a wonderful place to live. Even before they introduced their 50₡ a month Full Family Funeral Plan (often taking chickens and other things in trade when money was really tight) they were here for the Tulsa community when they were needed most. The Moores have done so with compassion, courage and commitment, the cornerstone of generations of service to this community.

James Herbert Moore and sons, William M. and John Foreman, founded Moore Undertakers in the early 1900’s. Later they were associated with Musgrove Funeral Home of Claremore. In 1929 they moved to Tulsa and became Moore’s Morticians. In 1932 they became Moore Funeral Home. Dr. Joseph Moore now oversees the operation of four Tulsa facilities. Elaine Moore-Jones is the manager of Moore’s Southlawn Chapel. The Moore family has worked to insure that Tulsa families have someone they can count on when they need them the most.

Our family has been taking care of Tulsa’s families. providing quality service and value, for a long time and that’s the way it should be. Because of the Moores in Tulsa, that’s the way it will continue to be.
