Nearly 11 years of practice and I’ve never had a baby born on my birthday…until now! What a wonderful gift knowing this little guy shares his special day with me.

Forever grateful for the trust parents put into me to not only care for them through their pregnancies but to also care for their most precious creation. Those first visits with baby are my favorite thing about practice 💜

What if I told you not to bother buying shoes for your baby? Nope not even when they first start walking!

There are so many benefits to being barefoot. It helps with normal foot development, drives proprioceptive input to the brain (which is like fuel for our nervous systems), and helps with balance.

Barefoot for as long as possible is best in most situations. There are exceptions, such as babies with delays or low tone. If you’re concerned about either, contact your healthcare provider.

Let’s talk about tongue ties 👅

There is a lot of confusion and misunderstanding in the world of tongue tie releases, even amongst major healthcare providers. Tongue ties seem to be a hot topic, but it’s not that they’re new, it’s that we know now more than ever their impacts.

Here’s a few important takes on ties

💜 Most pediatricians are not great at assessing for ties or helping with feeding issues. And that’s ok! It’s literally not their job. They are experts in illness and disease, not oral motor function. If you think your child has a tie and your pediatrician doesn’t, I recommend getting a second opinion from a tongue tie expert.

💜 A tongue tie release is surgery. A minor surgery, but still surgery nonetheless. Just like any surgery it is important to strengthen, release, and train the muscles in the area with the proper rehab for optimal results. You wouldn’t get a shoulder surgery and not do PT. No one should ever offer a tongue tie release without the proper bodywork and rehab before and after.

💜 The skill set of the provider performing the release makes a MASSIVE difference. Similar to how all chiropractors are technically *allowed* to see kids or pregnant people, all dentists can technically perform releases. That doesn’t mean they are skilled at it. An incomplete release can lead to issues later or a revision surgery so it’s important to assess how many of the provider’s patients need repeat procedures. We have our favorites for a reason.

💜 tongue ties inhibit proper oral function. That’s not just for breastfed babies. Proper tongue function impacts the palate and airway growing the way they should. This is important for all of us, not just breastfed babies. While breastfeeding concerns are typically the most urgent reasons ties, all babies with ties can benefit from bodywork and/or a release.
