This Pride Month, the Washington Medical Commission honors Dr. Sara Josephine Baker, public health pioneer and proud member of the LGBTQ+ community.

As the first director of NYC’s Bureau of Child Hygiene, Dr. Baker helped dramatically lower the infant mortality rate. She was also the first woman to earn a doctorate in public health from NYU in 1917. Beyond her many professional achievements, she lived openly as a gay physician and was part of Heterodoxy, a feminist group advocating for suffrage and equality.

We celebrate her legacy of compassion, innovation, and inclusion. Happy Pride! 🏳️‍🌈
