A Kansas City firefighter paramedic was fatally stabbed by a patient who he was taking via ambulance to a local hospital, officials said.

Graham Hoffman, 29, was transporting a patient following a routine medical call from police on Sunday when he was stabbed in the chest, piercing his heart. Despite lifesaving efforts, Hoffman died from his injuries at North Kansas City Hospital.

Shanetta Bossell, 38, of Kansas City, was charged with murder and armed criminal action, prosecutors said.

According to court documents, emergency crews received reports of a woman, later identified as Bossell, walking on the shoulder of a state highway around 12:30 a.m. on Sunday. Callers had been concerned for her safety.

After Bossell was located, police officers requested EMT for further treatment and she was taken to Saint Luke's Hospital. On the way — around 1:25 a.m. — Bossell allegedly stabbed Hoffman with a knife.

Bossell was taken into custody and held on a $1 million bond, CBS affiliate KCTV reported. If convicted, she faces up to life in prison.

According to court documents, Bossell was arrested on April 23 on unrelated assault charges after she allegedly bit a Platte City police officer during a separate arrest.

Hoffman had been a member of the Kansas City Fire Department since 2022.

"Graham was a vibrant individual who loved life and loved serving his community," said KCFD Fire Chief Ross Grundyson, according to KCTV. "He was an excellent paramedic. He treated his patients with the highest level of skill and compassion. "

Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas said in a statement that he is "heartbroken" by Hoffman's death.

The department held its annual meeting and also performed an extrication demonstration for its members. We had a great turnout and enjoyed a bbq lunch with about 35 in attendance.

Congratulations to Jerry (new president), Gregg (retains VP), Debby(retains secretary), Candy (retains treasurer), Steve, Ranger, and Jayden remain as board members.

Thank you to those that attended, stopped by to tour the station, partook in elections, paid their dues, donated their time and/or money, and watched some of the hard work and training that our department does to help keep Tunas safer. We couldn’t do it without the support of our community!

Reminder we will be holding our annual meeting on April 26, 2025 at 12 noon. We will be serving hamburgers and hotdogs. We would like to invite all of our members to attend and see how your local fire department operates. We will also be having a live extrication demonstration after our meeting.

The rest of this week is supposed to be low humidity bad winds again we heavily encourage everyone DO NOT BURN 🔥 🚩 

A Red Flag Warning is in effect for Monday from 12 to 8 PM. Dry conditions with relative humidity values as low as 20 percent combined with gusty winds up to 40 mph from the southwest will support significant fire danger.

Saturday many of our crew members spent the afternoon cleaning our equipment and restocking. The fires Friday had all 5 of our trucks and personnel busy.

Yesterday afternoon at 2:24 pm crews were dispatched to a large outside fire in the area of Purgatory Lane and Steadfast Lane. With very limited resources and help due too many other fires in the area, we did the best we could too get it under control. We would like too thank all the firefighters and community members who showed up to help ! It was no easy day and we can’t thank everyone enough! Without the rain so much more damage would have been done!Cleared scene at 7:30 pm
