Falling short doesn’t mean you’ve failed your child.

You’re human, with a nervous system that gets overwhelmed, too.

When you snap, shut down, or walk away, it isn’t a sign of weakness. It’s a sign you reached your limit. And limits don’t break the connection; avoiding repair does.

Returning after a hard moment is what matters.
Repair teaches safety. Repair teaches resilience.
Repair is enough.

Yesterday, I attended a clinical social work colloquim focusing on integrating neuroscience and social work as well as elder su***de.

A few take-aways:

Neuro--
✨️Music lessons (like piano or another instrument) are great for building neuroplasticity. You can progress at your own pace.
✨️Reflections that have a social connection are important. Think book clubs. Read a book and gather together to discuss the book.
✨️Responsibilities in activities are important as people are "depending" on the person to lead, organize, etc
✨️Celebrate successes, no matter how small.

Elder Su***de--
✨️Does not follow classic signs and symptoms
✨️Some things we may think of that are troublesome to older adult--bladder control issues, presbycusis misdiagnosed as dementia, not feeling like contributing/lacking value, changes like frustrations with online bill paying methods (that 2 factor authentication gets me!)
✨️12 US states have physician-assisted su***de; PA does not.
