On Easter 2020, longtime Tupelo emergency physician Dr. Bobby Dale started having trouble speaking. His wife Martha noticed his slurred speech and a droop on his face – classic signs of stroke.

Dr. Dale insisted he was OK. Martha knew he wasn’t. She called their neighbors, who rushed him to the Emergency Department at North Mississippi Medical Center-Tupelo.

Because they acted fast, Dr. Dale was able to get a specialized procedure to remove a blood clot and restore blood flow to his brain. After days in critical care and weeks of intensive rehab, he walked out of the hospital on his own – and today he estimates he’s about 95% recovered.

Now he’s back to hunting and fishing, walking up to five miles a day and mentoring the next generation of caregivers.

“If Martha hadn’t picked up on it right away and if my neighbors hadn’t gotten me to the right care, I might not be here,” he says.

Stroke signs can be easy to miss – even for a doctor. If you notice sudden facial drooping, arm weakness or slurred speech, don’t wait. Call 911.

Spring Forward doesn’t always feel like a fresh start — especially for families.

Losing an hour of sleep can leave everyone feeling groggy, irritable and off their routine for days. Even small shifts in sleep can affect mood, focus and safety.

Good news: simple changes can help your body adjust more smoothly. Try:

• Moving bedtime earlier by 15–20 minutes for a few days
• Getting natural light first thing in the morning
• Dimming lights and reducing screens before bed
• Keeping caffeine earlier in the day
• Staying consistent with your bedtime routine

If you’re still feeling “off” a week after the time change or you’re struggling with chronic sleep issues, a sleep medicine consult may help.

When Charelette Miller of Tupelo looked in the mirror in early 2022, she saw more than just her reflection.

She saw a woman desperately in need of change.

At 36 years old, Charelette was living with morbid obesity, limited mobility and a host of health challenges: diabetes, hypertension, joint pain, anxiety, depression and a family history of heart disease.

“I had all these things fighting against me that would limit my quality of life,” she recalls.

Charelette went to several doctors, “trying to figure out why I was so young but so exhausted all the time.”

Her breakthrough came when she met Dr. Will Cauthen and the North Mississippi Health Services weight loss team. “They’re amazing,” she says. “My life would not be what it is without them,” she says.

Charelette Miller transformed her life through daily commitment and support from her care team, ultimately losing 162 pounds and gaining a new sense of energy, confidence and purpose.
