Well of course we stop to look at the Santa Clara tract on our way back from the eye doctor because we have been hungry to find a Chaga hymenium. So we are driving and we happen to tour this property on a whimb because it one I have been eyeing for a prospective future forest farm of wild chaga. The main road was washed out which put us closer to this land, which I reluctantly stopped at, because god knows I donā€™t need any more distractions before our organic audit this Friday. Not even 20 yards in and we spot his beauty. A Yellow Birch Birch Basidocarp!!!! Chaga FRUITING BODY! This is an incredible stroke of luck at an ironic moment in time at an ironic location. I have been plugging trees with mycelium from Chaga spores we harvested last year and I have been praying to find another poroid to capture more spores for making more dowels and inoculant material, because we have used up all the spores from my first poroid. They call it the law of reciprocity. Maybe this was the universeā€™s way of saying that it appreciates what we are doing and is ready to help us along the way. What a gift. Iā€™m blessed to work with wild Chaga and soon we will be releasing a film devoted to advocacy and protection of wild Chaga. It is possible to take from nature in a sustainable way. Nature actually likes to gift us šŸ„°šŸŖ²šŸ›šŸŖ±šŸŒæšŸ„

Our Story

Birch Boys was founded by an outdoor enthusiast named Garrett Kopp at age 15. Garrett was first introduced to Chaga tea after pouring himself (and drinking) a cup of what he thought was a plain iced tea from his grandmotherā€™s refrigerator. When she walked into the kitchen and saw what he was drinking, she told him he was drinking a mushroom called Chaga (or, the King of Herbs, as she liked to call it). She immediately took him into her backyard and showed him how to identify and harvest it.

He spent his high school years foraging for Chaga, among other wild mushrooms & plant edibles, and routinely brought them to farmers markets. This proved to be much more lucrative than his previous endeavors, which included a paper route, a lawn mowing gig, and a YouTube channel. After skipping his senior year of high school to attend Clarkson Universityā€™s early college program to study business, he quickly realized that his Grandmotherā€™s influence had much more potential than the glorified lemonade he had pushed to the back-burner. He left college after three years to build his business, Birch Boys, in his home town of Tupper Lake, New York.

After raising over $75,000 in business plan competitions, Birch Boys launched their signature product, Chaga Tea Bags, in March of 2017. After 9 months and countless cold calls, it was stocked in 150 stores. Simultaneously, several new product lines were introduced and refined.

In late 2017, Birch Boys embarked on their next big venture by launching a successful crowdfunding campaign aimed at starting their own retail operation, which opened its doors in April 2018.
