TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (WBRC) - Showing appreciation to our veterans with a gift to make them feel warm, safe and appreciated is a tradition in west Alabama.
The West Alabama Quilters Guild didn’t start the Quilts of Valor program, but it’s been their mission for more than a decade to show their support for those veterans who call west Alabama home.
“As we wrap the Quilt of Valor around them, that’s to show them that America supports them, that we love them, that we respect them, that we appreciate the service and sacrifice that they gave for our country and for each individual to have freedom in our country,” according to Becky Brown with the West Alabama Quilters Guild.
The group visited The Crossings at North River for Veterans Day where they presented handmade quilts to 17 veterans who live there. Brown told the honorees that each stitch of each quilt represents a prayer for that veteran. Cheryl Small with the West Alabama Quilters Guild explained the amount of work that goes into this effort.
“Many hours go into sewing a quilt,” Small said. “The fabric has to be purchased or donated. The fabric has to be cut and sewn. Then we put a batting between two pieces of fabric to make the quilt itself. Then we quilt it, bind it and a ‘Quilt of Valor’ label is put onto each quilt. That shows a sign of healing when it’s placed around a veteran.” Quilts of Valor were presented to the longest tenured veterans at the Crossings.
“We at The Crossings are honored to recognize our resident veterans for their sacrifice and commitment to our country,” said Wendy Christian, Director of Lifestyles. “This ceremony is a small but meaningful way to express our gratitude and celebrate their service.” 🇺🇸
