University of Alabama Intellectual Disabilities Participant Registry

University of Alabama Intellectual Disabilities Participant Registry Connecting families with research on intellectual disabilites. Families are interested in taking an active role in research on intellectual disabilities.

This page is to build a community of interested persons and will be monitored for inappropriate content. The registry is for families in Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, and Florida who have a child or familiy member with an intellectual disability or syndrome related. Basic information is collected and entered into our secure registry database. When a study arises, a database search is conducted to locate families that meet the criteria of the study. The Registry Coordinator makes contact with these families to see if they are interested in participation, which is completely voluntary. Registry families are contacted a maximum of 3 times per year to participate in research studies, and 2 times per year to update contact information. All of the studies that the registry recruits for are minimal risk, not-for-profit, and IRB-approved.

Happy World Down Syndrome Day from all of us at the Lab!

Most of our participants have Down syndrome. We feel lucky to meet and get to know people with Down Syndrome from all over the country.

Today, in honor of World Down Syndrome Day (WDSD), we all have on our crazy socks! Did you know that people wear crazy socks on WDSD because socks look like chromosomes? Down syndrome is characterized by a third copy of the 21st chromosome, so is celebrated yearly on 3/21.

We are so thankful for all of the progress that is being made towards inclusion for people with Down syndrome, but know that there remains much progress that needs to occur. But today, we celebrate all of the wonderful people in our lives with Down syndrome and the impacts they make around us.

To honor, support, and celebrate them, please enjoy some fun pictures of family, friends, and ID lab members wearing their crazy socks today!πŸ€ͺ🀍πŸ₯³

This weekend, we had a participant travel into town to come participate in the Cognitive Change Study. He made the most of his weekend by attending a baseball and a basketball game! Knowing he was a fan of the SEC, we made sure to get him to these events since he was helping us so much by coming a long way from home to participate in the study. Along with cheering for the Crimson Tide, he also had a blast exploring some nice food spots around Tuscaloosa. He is a true tide guy!!

The Cognitive Change study had a busy start to the new year beginning with having a wonderful participant back to campus for a second round! Then, Kameron and Sara made a trip to Point Clear to meet another family for the study. Although busy testing, they made a little time to explore the area and take in the beautiful scenery the coast had to offer. Shortly after, Kameron and Sara headed back to get ready to meet a friend coming back for their round two session. All smiles and laughs around here!

Our Story

The University of Alabama Intellectual Disabilities Participant Registry (UAIDPR) is a program where individuals with intellectual disability participate in studies that help to increase understanding of intellectual disability and how to meet its challenges. Research studies often have difficulty finding participants, therefore new participants are greatly needed to complete this important work. All studies served by the registry are low-risk to participants, not-for-profit, approved for research ethics, and voluntary. The registry is currently enrolling children and adults from Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia and Florida who have any type of intellectual disability. Online registration is available and for more information visit our website at www.uaidpr.ua.edu, or you can give us a call at 205-348-4253 or email at idlab.ua.edu
