Just like their mother, a baby’s body goes through a great deal during birth. After spending more than nine months in a very confined space, they then experience the physically demanding process of being born. Whether the delivery is natural or assisted, significant pressure can be placed on an infant’s spine and skull. Factors like labor complications, the use of forceps or vacuum extraction, or even an unusually fast or prolonged delivery may contribute to subtle misalignments in a newborn’s delicate musculoskeletal system. Infant chiropractic care aims to help relieve this strain and support the baby’s natural alignment and overall balance.

Meet the Bigbie crew. They've been with us for a couple of years now and continue to come in regularly for everything from prenatal care to toddler sleep issues and everything in between. It is always an honor to be trusted for the entire family, but here's what Mom (Shelley) had to say:

"Chiropractic care has been such a blessing for our family. It kept me comfortable throughout pregnancy and continues to keep me aligned after long days spent playing on the floor with the kids. It’s helped Reese maintain a good latch, which has made nursing go so much smoother. It has improved Henry’s sleep and overall wellness, which is much needed for our wild and rough little boy! We’re so grateful for the difference Dr. Corey has made in all of our lives."

And we're grateful for them as well! How can help your family thrive?

📣Children don't "grow out of" things like coneheads, flat spots, high palates, and definitely not things like delayed milestones and birth trauma.📣

In our office, we specialize in taking care of patients in or around the birth phase of life, and there is a recurring theme of birth trauma that gets ignored by so many other providers. I don't think this is ignored intentionally, but it happens all the same. For example, with plagiocephaly or an odd-shaped head like the one in this picture, it is often recommended to just watch and wait. Until it becomes more obvious and may require a helmet for weeks or months to correct. Even then, the solution seems to be for cosmetic purposes and not functional.

Most cranial distortions can be corrected more easily and with fewer interventions if addressed earlier. This is one of the many reasons we recommend infants be checked by a pediatric chiropractor as soon as possible.🎯

How soon? The record in our office is 36 hours after birth (and about 30 minutes after birth in my home).

If your pregnancy and/or delivery was anything other than a peaceful, smooth process full of rainbows 🌈 and unicorns 🦄, I highly recommend setting up an appointment for everyone involved asap. Because kids don't grow out of birth trauma, they grow into it, and so do their parents.

✨ Swaddling ✨

Most new parents think that they need to swaddle their baby. But the truth is that swaddling can hinder a baby’s development.

Babys are born with hundreds of primitive reflexes. These reflexes are how a baby learns to nurse, close their hand around your finger, and eventually roll over and crawl.

One of these reflexes is the Moro or startle reflex. This reflex is why a baby may wake up when they are put down. They feel the change of position and “startle” awake. This reflex is present at birth and should go away by 3 months. It integrates into the brain as the brain grows and becomes more developed. Simply put, a baby had to use this reflex over and over until the brain is developed enough to not respond to it.

Parents swaddle babies to reduce their startle reflex so that they both get better sleep. The issue is, by reducing the reflex, the brain development is affected.

Babies who are swaddled don’t get to “practice” their startle reflex and therefore their brain won’t make the connections needed to turn the reflex off by 2-4 months when it should naturally disappear.

In our office, we often see babies around 4-6 months who struggle to sleep. Mom is exhausted and considering sleep training but knows there’s something else going on. Swaddling for too long + the 4 month sleep progression are a bad combination and can cause the whole family to become stressed and exhausted.

Typically, these parents swaddle their baby so that baby can sleep longer periods. Then when they stop swaddling because baby can roll, their baby still startles and wakes up easily. They turn to the weighted sleep sacks which just prolong and worsen this issue. Now the startle reflex gets stronger and persistent. Brain development has been altered and the milestones of integration of all primitive reflexes are affected which in turn affect when a baby learns to roll, sit, crawl, and walk.

This is why we DO NOT recommend swaddling. It has neurological consequences for a baby’s development.

Swaddling does mimic how a baby felt in the womb. So IF you decide you need to swaddle your newborn baby, only do so for two weeks maximum!

At our recent conference, where I was teaching, someone asked how we perform an exam on a toddler who doesn't want to sit still.🧑‍ The simplest answer is, we don't perform exams ON toddlers, we perform exams WITH toddlers. Children aren't designed for sitting still and listening to pulse rates; they're designed for play and movement, which means so are our exams. During a child's visit to our office, it may look more like a game of "Simon Says" or "I spy" than a physical exam, but sometimes that's what it takes to get the job done. 💯

So if you're worried about how well your little one is going to sit still during their visit, don't be, because their Doctor probably isn't going to be sitting still for long either.🏃‍♂️🏃‍♀️🏃

Primitive Reflexes are a window to the maturity and integrity of the central nervous system.🧠 This little one is demonstrating a textbook ATNR or Asymmetrical Tonic Neck Reflex,🤺 which develops in utero, helps the baby "corkscrew" through the birth canal, and typically integrates (goes away) between 6-9 months of age. When Primitive Reflexes don't show up on time or go away when expected, there is often a skeletal restriction of motion. For example, kids with retained ATNRs tend to have difficulty turning their heads fully to each side.

No one is qualified as a pediatric chiropractor to restore this proper motion.💯 With proper motion of the cervical spine, this reflex stands a much better chance of integrating appropriately, and their central nervous system will have a better chance of maturing the way it is meant to do. 🎯
