Families in the seven counties we serve can rest easy knowing that day or night, help is always available. Our after-hours care is handled by six full-time, highly experienced hospice nurses whose sole focus is hospice care.

When you call, you’re not reaching a call center in another city. You’re connecting with real, local nurses who can coach you by phone or come directly to your home when needed. Compassionate, knowledgeable care — exactly when it matters most.

As we look ahead to 2026, one of our goals is to grow our direct patient volunteer program. This special opportunity allows volunteers to be matched with a patient for home visits, offering companionship through simple moments like light household help or meaningful conversation. Sometimes, just being present makes the biggest difference.

One of the many things that makes Hospice of West Alabama stand out is our transport van.
This resource allows us to safely and comfortably transport patients when the need arises, helping remove barriers to care and easing stress for patients and families alike. It’s one more way we go beyond medical support to provide compassion, dignity, and peace of mind during every step of the journey.

Because we are a nonprofit, we are able to care for patients who may not have insurance coverage, as well as those whose care costs exceed what insurance is able to reimburse. This allows us to say yes to care when families need it most — without compromise.

This week’s Staff Appreciation Award goes to Erin Deaver. Erin consistently goes above and beyond in her role, always bringing a wonderful sense of humor, a genuine smile, and a personality that makes her a joy to work with. Although she has only been with HOWA for a couple of years, she has quickly risen through the ranks thanks to her wealth of knowledge, strong communication skills, and endless innovative ideas. Her positive attitude and likability make her not only a respected leader, but also a favorite among her colleagues.

💜 At Hospice of West Alabama, we know grief doesn’t follow a timeline. That’s why Irene Evans, our dedicated bereavement counselor, is here to provide support, understanding, and a safe space for healing.
Irene offers one-on-one counseling sessions and support groups that provide a safe, welcoming space to help navigate loss. Our bereavement services are open to the community, whether or not your loved one received care from Hospice of West Alabama.
