Hospice of West Alabama, Inc.

Hospice of West Alabama, Inc. We have been providing care to terminally ill patients and their families in West Alabama since 1982.

*Hospice focuses on caring, not curing, and in most cases care is provided in the person’s home.
*Hospice care is also provided in freestanding hospice facilities – such as HOWA's Helen H. Hahn House – hospitals, nursing homes, and other long-term care facilities.
*Hospice services are available to patients of any age, religion, race, or illness.
*Hospice is paid for through the Medicare hospice benefit, Medicaid hospice benefit, and most private insurers. Even if a person does not have coverage, HOWA has funds available as a United Way agency and from community donations to provide services.
*No patient physically appropriate for hospice care will be turned away because of an inability to pay.

At Hospice of West Alabama, one thing that truly sets us apart is how we respond after hours. Families in the seven counties we serve can rest easy knowing that day or night, help is always available. Our after-hours care is handled by six full-time, highly experienced hospice nurses whose sole focus is hospice care.

When you call, you’re not reaching a call center in another city. You’re connecting with real, local nurses who can coach you by phone or come directly to your home when needed. Compassionate, knowledgeable care — exactly when it matters most.

Thank You! 🤍 We’re so grateful for your generosity.

As we look ahead to 2026, one of our goals is to grow our direct patient volunteer program. This special opportunity allows volunteers to be matched with a patient for home visits, offering companionship through simple moments like light household help or meaningful conversation. Sometimes, just being present makes the biggest difference.
If you feel called to serve in this way or would like more information, we would love to hear from you.
Please reach out to me at aklicker@hospiceofwestalabama.org.

Thank you for your heart and your willingness to make a difference in our community.

One of the many things that makes Hospice of West Alabama stand out is our transport van.
This resource allows us to safely and comfortably transport patients when the need arises, helping remove barriers to care and easing stress for patients and families alike. It’s one more way we go beyond medical support to provide compassion, dignity, and peace of mind during every step of the journey.

Today, we honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. — a reminder that compassion, love, and service have the power to change lives.

At Hospice of West Alabama, we strive to live out these words every day by bringing comfort, dignity, and light to patients and families when they need it most. May we continue choosing love, understanding, and care in all that we do.

Because we are a nonprofit, we are able to care for patients who may not have insurance coverage, as well as those whose care costs exceed what insurance is able to reimburse. This allows us to say yes to care when families need it most — without compromise.
We are honored to serve as your local nonprofit hospice provider, and we are deeply grateful for the community that makes our mission possible.

Her positive attitude and likability make her not only a respected leader, but also a favorite among her colleagues.
