Druid City Doula

Druid City Doula Druid City Doula exists because every person in Tuscaloosa should have the support of a doula. I believe all birthing people should have access to a doula.

Founded by Emily Altman in the fall of 2016, Druid City Doula provides birthing people in Tuscaloosa with continual physical, mental, and emotional support before, during, and after birth despite life circumstances, income level, or location. Every expectant parent should have the best possible birth experience. Every expectant parent has a voice and that voice should be heard. DCD's purpose is to help birthing people have the best possible birth experience and help ensure that their voices are heard. By partnering with Birthwell Partners, DCD is able to offer free and reduced-cost doula services to low-resource parents in the Tuscaloosa area.

So excited about this:

From MariahAlyce Clc Doula: I am so excited about this opportunity that I am finally able to share! 🙏🏽

I recently received a donation with one simple request - to put back into the community (specifically West side/Tuscaloosa). The statistics have reflected a need for prenatal, labor, and breastfeeding education and support. I have been granted the opportunity to share my Doula and Lactation services with FIVE expecting mothers.

Words can not express how thankful I am for the loving family that made this possible. They have been a blessing and I am so excited to be able to share this blessing with others. ❤

If you are interested in applying for this opportunity, please feel free to fill out this scholarship application to be considered. If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact me at www.mariahalyce.com. If you desire to contribute to the scholarship fund so that we can continue to make this an opportunity for more mothers, feel free to send donations via PayPal (paypal.me/MariahAlyce). No amount is too little.

Even when controlling for income, education, and prenatal care, Black women die in childbirth at 3 to 4 times the rate of white women, and Black babies die at double the rate of white babies.

Today, Juneteenth, Tru Kellman and her team at Jamaa Birth Village open their new Midwifery Clinic in Ferguson, Missouri -- the region's first equal access midwifery clinic where women will be able to receive services regardless of their income.

From our Together Rising:
"After Brittany “Tru” Kellman endured two traumatic birthing experiences, during which she was dismissed and misled by her doctors, she was determined to empower other Black women to avoid the same experience.

According to the CDC, Black women are three to four times as likely to die from pregnancy-related causes as white women, and Black infants are more than twice as likely to die as white infants. C-sections are 40% more likely among Black women than white women. This disparity is due to the compounded stressors of gender and racial discrimination throughout Black women’s lives and systemic racism in health care, leading to the dismissal of Black women’s questions, concerns, and pain.

When Tru learned that receiving support from doulas and midwives leads to greatly improved outcomes for women and babies, she was determined to bring these invaluable services to her community.

Tru studied traditional midwifery in Ghana and attended the Midwives College of Utah, becoming the first Black midwife in Missouri with an MEAC-accredited degree.

In 2015, she founded the . Jamaa—Swahili for family—has worked with more than 350 families in providing perinatal care.

In 2018, Together Rising was honored to invest $135,000 in Tru and Jamaa toward the new Clinic. And, after years of tireless work, Tru opens the region’s first equal access midwifery clinic where women will be able to receive services regardless of their income.

We thank you for investing in Tru and Jamaa Birth Village, and we invite you to follow, with us, the life-changing work they will do with the new Midwifery Clinic.
