Su***de Prevention Month 2025. I decided to feature the Social Pain Model that was adapted by me as my theoretical approach to help inform my research for my dissertation in November 2022. As I explained in my video that I posted yesterday, people experience negative social appraisal, suicidogenic cognition, and social/psychological pain. Take notice of how each of these components feed into and influence each other. Intervention needs to be started during this phase. Think about what can be done to help the person during this phase. A person who experiences social and psychological pain is not to expected to become suicidal, but it is wise to try to understand how they are coping. Also, I asked the question. "Are you having thoughts of hurting yourself or others?" There was once the misconception that asking a person if they are suicidal would lead that person to su***de. The fact is not asking the person if they are suicidal may leave the person alone with this pain thought. Asking the question helps the person to feel less alone. Remember, I mentioned in the video that sometimes it takes one last upset that can cause a person to think that they have no other choice but to end his or her life. Talk to the person. Be a safe person or space so that the person can freely come to you. Then, certainly encourage that person to seek professional, mental health services. If it is you, please seek professional mental health services. I understand now so much more about suicidality. I want to talk about it. I want you to talk about it. Let's normalize it so that we can prevent it for people. Sincerely, Dr. Sondra Wilder

Light is still coming for you.

Self-care for depression isn’t always bubble baths or journaling. Sometimes it looks like:
Taking your meds
Saying no
Asking for help
Sitting in silence
Whatever your self-care looks like today, it’s enough.

“Keep showing up — even if all you can do today is breathe.”
Tag someone who needs this reminder. Or send this to yourself.
Progress is still progress, no matter how slow.
