At Tustin House, Dignity is in the Details is not a slogan but it’s a standard our caregivers are trained to uphold. Most dementia care focuses on two things: the diagnosis… or the behavior.

Our work lives in what’s often overlooked; the space in between. The Missing Middle as I call it. Where a diagnosis gets blurred and blended into the identity of the person. They become the person that is excused with "they have dementia..." without amy real understanding of what that actually means.

The BrainWave program was built specifically for Tustin House to train our team to operate in that space every day. Our caregivers are taught to deeply understand each resident beyond the diagnosis and to proactively shape routines, environments, and interactions in ways that reduce distress before it ever shows up.

This is not reactive care. It’s disciplined, intentional care.

Through BrainWave, our staff earn the designation of Certified NeuroCare Navigators; meaning this way of thinking is embedded into how they move through the day, not pulled out only when something goes wrong.

When care is done right, escalation isn’t the norm.
Sundowning isn’t inevitable. Aggression and elopement are not expected outcomes.

BrainWave Milestone Win – Yesterday at Tustin House

There have been a lot of great questions lately about what BrainWave actually is and what we’re doing in this program, so I want to pause and share a real win from yesterday’s training.

Yesterday we focused on “The Missing Middle.”
This is the phase of dementia that gets overlooked the most because the decline isn’t always obvious, the diagnosis doesn’t feel loud yet, and behaviors often get misunderstood or mislabeled. It’s where people are still very much themselves, but the world starts to move faster than their ability to process it.

Our 2nd shift team dug deep into identity and engagement and spent time learning how to recognize true response time. We watched the difference of rushing someone then providing silence, not assuming confusion when what’s really happening is processing.

We talked about: • How long it takes to hear information • How long it takes to process it
• How long it takes to respond in a meaningful way

When we slow ourselves down and give accurate response time, something powerful happens.
We reduce overstimulation. We reduce anxiety.
We reduce those heightened emotional reactions that so often show up as frustration, agitation, or withdrawal.

This is BrainWave in action. Not doing more but doing better. Not reacting but understanding.
Not managing behaviors but protecting dignity.

Yesterday was a big step forward, and I’m proud of the intentional work happening on this team. This is exactly how culture shifts and care deepens.
