Several studies have found that the larger the volume of IV fluids a mother receives during labour, the more weight her baby loses in the first 24 hours. This is because the IV fluids pass to the baby’s body and increase the baby’s birth weight. In the first 24 hours after birth babies, whose mothers received IV fluids during labour, produce more wet diapers than babies, whose mothers do not receive IV fluids. The extra wet diapers result in an extra weight loss.

The AAP updated its infant sleep guidelines for the first time since 2016.

On the positive side, they identified that breastfeeding significantly reduces the risk of infant sleep death, especially when the infant is provided human milk for more than 2 months. They promoted breastfeeding for 6 months exclusively and continuation for 1 year and beyond based on parent and baby’s comfort. They also suggested that babies sleep in the same room as their parents and that swaddling a baby for sleep may not be in a baby’s best interest as they can’t use their limbs to right themselves if they happen to become covered by a blanket or flip over.

On the negative side, despite the research and the mammalian norm of sleeping with one’s infant, they took a very firm stance against bedsharing in any circumstances. This is extremely disappointing. While the research does identify that infant bedsharing with people other than parents, when parents are under the influence, are on sofas or chairs, or when the baby is on a soft surface can come with an increased risk of rare infant death, it is reprehensible that the AAP feels that they have to tell parents that the normal human behavior of co-bedding is dangerous with full-term breast/chestfeeding infants who are healthy and sleeping with a sober, non-medicated parent on a safe sleeping surface.
