We are still seeing scheduled patients during this time. However, some of our normal functions are limited at this point. We appreciate your patience while we get back up and running. 🙂

We hope everyone had a safe and happy Fourth of July! Now with the majority of those loud fireworks keeping our babies awake being over with here is some info from Colorado Children’s Hospital on how to reset that sleep schedule!

“What's considered a safe sleep environment?

A safe sleeping situation keeps babies close, allowing you to keep an eye (and ear) on them. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends that, for the first year, parents room-share (but not bed-share), with babies sleeping in the parents' rooms, but on a separate surface.

A safe sleep environment exists when babies sleep:

In the parents' room
On their backs on a firm surface
In a bassinet, bedside sleeper or crib containing only a tight-fitting sheet
In a sleep area that's free of any loose bedding, pillows, blankets, stuffed animals, bumpers or toys
Wearing a sleep sack or a onesie
Cultivating this safe sleep setting is key, says Norman Friedman, MD, director of the Children's Sleep Medicine Laboratory, as it may "decrease the risk of sudden infant death syndrome by as much as 50%."”

With temperatures risings we want to remind you to wear your sunscreen!

“When it comes to wearing any kind of SPF, you should be putting it kids six months and older every day. (The younger set should stay out of direct sun altogether.) Why? Well, a lot of your lifetime sun exposure happens in your youth. "It is estimated that 60 to 80 percent of an individual’s total lifetime sun exposure happens in the first 18 years of life," says dermatologist Marnie Nussbaum, MD. "In fact, according to the Skin Cancer Foundation, just one or two blistering sunburns doubles your child's risk of melanoma, the deadly form of skin cancer."

But when it comes to babies and children, any old sunscreen simply won't do. It's important to look at ingredients a little more closely when it comes to what you're layering onto your kids' skin. According to Nussbaum, it's definitely best to steer clear of chemical sunscreens (ones containing ingredients with carbon-based compounds such as oxybenzone, octinoxate and avobenzone) that can be super irritating for children with sensitive skin or eczema. "I recommend opting for a mineral sunscreen that is paraben- and fragrance-free as well as hypoallergenic," says Dr. Nussbaum.

ICYMI, mineral sunscreens have a base made out of zinc and titanium, which are gentler on kids' skin. "I prefer mineral sunscreens for children, because you can easily see where it's being applied and are less likely to miss a spot. Also, some chemical sunscreens take about 20 minutes to begin working, whereas mineral sunscreens provide protection as soon as they're applied to the skin," explains Dr. Nussbaum.

Luckily there are plenty of SPFs that are safe and easy to swipe onto their mushy baby cheeks.”
