Let’s talk AAC evaluations
I like to follow the 3 3 4 model! Before we go into it, I want to acknowledge that some SLPs don’t have the luxury of doing this model. It requires time, collaboration, and trial devices that can go with the kids.
If you get through this and say - nope, I can’t make this work… promise me this… you will make these considerations when recommending a device.
Alright so let’s get started.
3️⃣ trial 3 devices
Language systems and devices are not created equal - we need to try several options to be successful
3️⃣ trial in 3 environments
This is often overlooked, but seeing the device in different settings is important for knowing if this device is the best fit.
4️⃣ trial it for 4 weeks
This gives you time to explore the settings and features. It also lets you confirm you have the right device. If you are using insurance they are “stuck” with that device for 5 years, so we want to make informed decisions
