Things to think about before introducing AAC!
First, if the individual can benefit from AAC, please recommend it! This post is designed to help you have a more informed conversation.
Before you even say “AAC” the family is likely already bringing their belief and knowledge of AAC to the table.
Sometimes there is excitement for AAC
Sometimes there is fear and reservation.
It’s our responsibility to listen to the families thoughts and provide appropriate information for the families. The most important part is to listen! They will tell you a lot by sharing their reservations.
Also know that one conversation won’t flip years of personal experiences, family beliefs, societal norms, or education. This can be a process and it’s okay if it is!
Biggest advice: listen and remember their reservations likely come from their current belief system. It’s not our job to change that but rather have informed conversations around it!
