Upon the death of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., President Johnson declared a National Day of Mourning; flags were lowered and a 3-mile-long procession accompanied the casket to the funeral.
And yet, upon Dr. King’s request, the eulogy included no mentions of his awards or accomplishments – instead, the funeral included a sermon, hymns, and reflections on Dr. King’s dedication to service.
While we remember the leader today, every day, we are grateful for the changes Dr. King inspired with his fight for equality and love for humanity. Whether you’re observing with a celebration, an act of service, or a dive into history, we hope you have a special MLK Day.
