Scenario #1

A high-ranking detective is issued an unmarked car for take home. He finishes his shift and drives home. Has a meatloaf dinner with his wife. gets up and take his county car to the gas station, fills it up on his credit card. He then goes in service as an Uber driver for the next six hours. He returns home and his nightly proceeds go into his wife's account which fund a special school for their autistic girl. The next morning, he returns to his day job.

Is this a problem?

I asked A.I. to prepare a historical summary of the King County Sheriff's office. Here it is: kind of sketchy..

Here's a comprehensive history of the King County Sheriff's Office (KCSO) in Washington State, tracing its evolution from frontier law enforcement to a modern regional agency:

🏛️ Origins and Early History (1852–1960s)

• Establishment: The first King County Sheriff was elected in 1852, shortly after the formation of Washington Territory. The office was created to provide law enforcement across the vast and sparsely populated county.

• Frontier Role: Early sheriffs were responsible for maintaining order, collecting taxes, and overseeing jails in a rugged, developing region.

• Growth: As Seattle and surrounding communities expanded, the sheriff’s office grew in scope, handling everything from criminal investigations to civil enforcement.

🔄 Structural Changes and Renaming (1968–1996)

• 1968 Charter Reform: Voters approved a change to the county charter, renaming the office the King County Department of Public Safety. The sheriff became an appointed position rather than elected.

• 1980s Rebranding: The department was renamed again to the King County Police Department, reflecting a more centralized and professionalized approach to law enforcement.

• 1996 Voter Reversal: Citizens voted to restore the elected status of the sheriff and revert the name to the King County Sheriff's Office, emphasizing accountability and public trust.

Modernization and Expansion (1990s–2010s)

• Contract Policing: KCSO began providing law enforcement services to 13 cities, two transit agencies, and unincorporated areas of King County. This model allowed smaller jurisdictions to access professional policing without maintaining their own departments.

• Specialized Units:

• Air Support: Helicopters for search and rescue and tactical operations

• Marine Patrol: Policing waterways and providing rescue services

• Criminal Investigations Division: Handling major crimes and forensic analysis

• Community Engagement: Programs like the Explorer Program offered youth training and mentorship in law enforcement careers.

⚖️ Governance and Accountability (2020–Present)

• 2020 Charter Amendments: Voters approved two major changes:

• The sheriff would again become an appointed position.

• The King County Council gained authority to redefine the sheriff’s duties.

• Leadership Transition:

• Sheriff Mitzi Johanknecht completed her elected term in 2021.

• Patti Cole-Tindall, previously Undersheriff, was appointed interim sheriff and confirmed as permanent sheriff in May 2022.

Current Scope and Structure

• Personnel: Over 1,000 employees, including approximately 720 deputies

• Jurisdiction: Serves 2.1 million residents, including unincorporated areas and contract cities

• Divisions:

• Field Operations

• Criminal Investigations

• Special Operations

• Technical Services

• Facilities: Includes four precincts, police boats, and six helicopters

🏛️ Legacy and Impact

• The KCSO has evolved from a frontier sheriff’s office into one of the largest and most complex law enforcement agencies in the Pacific Northwest.

• It plays a vital role in regional safety, emergency response, and interagency cooperation.

We have good news. The head cardiologist came in this morning and told Gregg that after reviewing all his tests he did not have another heart attack. It was tachycardia that made his pulse go so high. He changed some of his meds and will let him come home tomorrow.
We thank everyone for your prayers and ❤️ love. We are so blessed Brenda

RIP Jared....

He gave Boyle fits, we never lost a case. I sent Boyle a letter demanding the county come into compliance with the new federal labor regulations. Boyle responded "Sue us". Enter Jared and rest is history. We were called unprofessional, bankrupt the county, fire officers if the lawsuit proceeded. Well we won and working conditions were improved. [These same administrators then filed their own getting millions.]
We called Jared the "bulldog" because he wouldn't quit.

He did a lot for officers and quietly made their lives better.

Very interesting Gregg, Im glad im gone.
