There’s something so special about birth at home. It’s peaceful, personal, and full of love. I’ve had the honor of walking alongside so many strong, beautiful women as they welcome their babies into the world right in the comfort of their home.

Today we celebrate the families who choose this path and the midwives around the world who walk it with them.

“Welcome to motherhood” by Jessica Urlichs

“When I entered motherhood
I walked through a little door
This is Motherhood it read
Everyone sat there in stripey tops
Exchanging pleasantries
Things scattered all over the floor
Bags overflowing
Nervous smiles
Connected by motherhood
Disconnected by unspoken truths
Then someone said
“I love being a Mum, but this is also really hard”
Then suddenly I didn’t feel alone anymore.

Isn’t it beautiful how your baby fits so perfectly in the crook of your arm?

That little space where snuggles happen, feeds are given, and quiet moments are shared feels like it was perfectly made just for this.

For comfort. For bonding. For love.

Whether you’re bottle feeding, breastfeeding, or just soaking in a sleepy cuddle, that curve of your arm is designed exactly for your sweet little one to feel safe and loved.

“What do contractions actually feel like?”

It’s one of the most common questions expecting mothers ask, especially as birth approaches. The real answer? It varies entirely based on the woman.

Let’s break it down:

Contractions are the tightening and releasing of the uterus as it works to dilate the cervix, and eventually push your baby down and out.

Early labor contractions:
-Strong period cramps
-A low, dull ache in the back or belly
-A tightening that comes and goes but is still manageable
-You might still be able to talk, walk, or rest during them

Active labor contractions:
-Longer, stronger, and closer together
-Felt in the lower belly, pelvis, back, or even thighs
-Described as waves that build, peak, then fade
-They can make you stop, focus, breathe, or even vocalize through them. And that’s normal.

Some women say contractions feel like a squeezing belt or a charley horse in the uterus. Others describe pressure, burning, or a heavy downward force. The sensation might change throughout labor or even from one pregnancy to the next.

The main takeaway should be that everyone is different; your experience likely won’t be the same as anyone else’s. The key is having the knowledge and tools to be ready for how your body responds to labor.

Happy Mother’s Day to all the amazing mamas I get to work with every day — you inspire me more than you know.

You can’t always tell how a new mama is doing just by looking at her. From the outside, she might be smiling, keeping up with feedings, posting cute baby pics, but could still be silently struggling internally.

Postpartum depression is more than just crying. It can show up as exhaustion, irritability, numbness, rage, anxiety, or feeling overwhelmed and disconnected. And it doesn’t mean a mother isn’t strong or grateful, it means she’s human.

If you know a new mama, here are a few things you can do to aid in her postpartum journey:

🤍 Check in with her daily. Even if it’s just a quick text or a call.

🤍 Offer support, even if they “seem fine.”

🤍 Listen without giving advice. Let them vent, and just be there.

🤍Remind her she’s doing a great job even if she doesn’t feel like it.

🤍Send a care package, whether some treats, a dinner, or even just a kind note.

Remember that if you’re truly concerned, there are a lot of options for help. A midwife or other care provider, hotlines, etc. They are never alone.

I’d like to introduce our new student midwife Hadassa
DePaula🤍

“My name is Hadassa DePaula, and I am a year 2
student midwife at Mercy in Action College of Midwifery.

I have had a passion for woman and babies from the
time I took my very first introduction to midwifery class
at the age of 13. I started my midwifery journey in 2023
and have enjoyed every moment of it! Even the late
study nights are worth the effort! When I went to my
first birth, I was in complete awe, and wondered why I
hadn’t started sooner! I knew I was doing what I was
meant to do. I have worked in the medical field since I
was fifteen. I started by volunteering at a fire
department as a junior EMT and then when I was
sixteen I switched to in home caregiving as a CNA,
then I moved to a rehabilitation center and worked
there for 2 years as a CNA. I also have my phlebotomy
certification and did blood draws at an urgent care part- time while working in rehab. I look forward to working with each of you! Outside of school I love hiking, horse-back riding, and play the cello and piano. Some of my favorite hobbies include all things outdoors like camping, backpacking, trail riding, and kayaking. I also enjoy crocheting, card making, and reading.”
