Criticism- Attacking another person’s character rather than addressing a specific behavior.

Contempt- Communicating disrespect, superiority, or disgust (sarcasm, eye-rolling, mocking)

Defensiveness- Responding to a complaint by denying responsibility or blaming the other person

Stonewalling-Shutting down, withdrawing, or refusing to engage during conflict.

These Four Horsemen disrupt connection in marriage and escalate any conflict, making the discussion unproductive. Instead of these disruptors, focus on mutual appreciation and respect, take a break when needed, and listening to your spouse.

Nobody likes a friendship or relationship that feels like they put forth all the effort! To build healthier relationships, focus on shared effort (and voice when it doesn’t feel like it) and not trying just to be right.

Conflict is an inevitable part of any relationship, whether that’s in marriage, with family, or between friends. We also tend to want to be right when we get into conflict, but that doesn’t help reach resolution. When we focus on understanding the other person and wanting to be understood, we’re able to reach real resolution.

In any relationship you’ll feel hurt, offended, or misunderstood by the other person at some point. It’s easy to draw inward when that happens rather than talking, but you may be missing out on understanding the true intentions of the other person. Although it can be awkward, communicating to understand the other person and voice your hurt is needed to maintain a healthy relationship.

Mutual respect in any relationship helps better resolve conflict and allows for deeper connection. When we are able to value and respect the other person (and when we feels the same), we view them in a healthy way instead of a person that’s always against us.

Healthy boundaries in relationships, whether that’s marriage, family, or friends, are very important! Boundaries help to set realistic expectations of others but also for yourself, which is very helpful if you find yourself with people-pleasing tendencies.
