Home birth is also laboring at home. And that means you have to be smart about how you use your energy. You don’t just “go into birth blind.”

Early labor = REST. REST. REST.
I cannot stress this enough. When contractions are mild, inconsistent, or feel like an exciting new sensation... DO NOT spend your energy trying to muster up stronger ones.

The best thing you can do at the very start is to sleep through them. Your body knows what to do. They will get stronger and more intense in their own time. You don’t need to “make” them get stronger. You will get so tired if you try to work through this early phase.

Active Labor = Work Smarter, Not Harder.
When contractions become regular and truly uncomfortable, now is the time to be smart and work with them.

Lean on your kitchen counter and rock side to side to ease back pain.
Grab the counter and squat.
Use a stool to lunge and make sure to switch sides.
Sit backwards on the toilet and sway back and forth.
Your house is full of tools for different positions to help labor effectively.

When you keep moving, progress happens. You’re actively helping your baby move down.
And don’t forget the fuel: Hydrate, snack, and sn**ch rest whenever you can.

Save this post if you’re planning a home birth, and share to help others labor smarter!

This birth was a reminder of why I became a midwife. The birth didn’t go the way that any of us hoped for or planned. It was long. It ended up in a necessary Csection. It was hard and emotional. But it was about listening to a woman and her body and its needs instead of trying to stuff her into someone’s box. It was filled with precious moments with her and her family as we anxiously waited for this baby to come. I was reminded so much why I have never wanted to be a hospital midwife when her 11yo narrated his shows to me and told me about Minecraft, when her 10yo told me how excited he was and how the new baby will be so cute, when her 6yo cuddled with me and told me about how purple unicorns are her favorite, when her 4yo told me that he loved me and that I was his best friend and cuddled with me until he fell asleep. These things are part of why I love being a homebirth midwife. Welcome to the world Junia. I hope that you always know how loved you are.

The nonprofit that I work for is raising money to get the training and equipment needed to further our goal of improving maternal and neonatal outcomes by teaching our families and those in the surrounding communities how to do infant CPR. Consider donating if you are able to.

This year, Rose City Wellness is honored to participate in Giving Tuesday. We are raising $2,500 to fund the training and equipment needed to provide CPR classes for expectant parents at the Rose City Birth Center and throughout the surrounding communities. This effort supports our mission to advance maternal and neonatal health outcomes. Donations can be made on our website or you can contact us for more information. https://rosecitywellness.org/cpr-classes/

Something to think of as we approach the holidays. Sometimes new mamas struggle to speak up as well meaning relatives hold baby hostage when baby just needs mama. Don’t be afraid to put your baby’s needs first.

Our Story

Mercy Eizenga LM, CPM was the head midwife and owner of Comforts of Home Midwifery for 12 years. She recently teamed up with Cherished Birth Center to offer home and birth center births in Tyler, TX and most of East Texas.

Mercy was first exposed to homebirth when she witnessed the birth of her little brother at the age of 7. Her interest in natural childbirth grew with the birth of her first child and then attending Bradley Natural Childbirth classes with a friend a year and a half later. Attending her first birth as a doula verified that she was called to be a midwife. Mercy attended the Association of Texas Midwives Training Program and completed an apprenticeship with what is now the Corpus Christi Birth Center. She holds a Texas state license, is listed with the state of Oklahoma, and holds her Certified Professional Midwife with the North American Registry of Midwives.
