Here’s a helpful Checklist to Use When Choosing a Post-Op Massage Therapist
✅ Qualifications & Experience
*Are they licensed massage therapy?
*Do they have specific training in Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD)?
*Do they specialize in post-surgical care (especially tummy tucks/liposuction)?
*Can they provide before/after photos or client testimonials?
*Do they have experience working with patients who had drains, seromas, fibrosis, etc.?
🏥 Clinic & Safety Standards
*Is the space clean, professional, and sanitized regularly?
*Do they use gloves and follow hygiene protocols?
*Are massages performed in a safe, comfortable environment (not just a spa setting)?
*Can they adapt the massage based on your surgeon’s instructions?
📋 Communication & Customization
*Did they ask about your surgery type, date, surgeon, and recovery plan?
*Are they willing to coordinate with your plastic surgeon, if needed?
*Do they listen to your comfort level and avoid areas that are painful or sensitive?
*Can they explain how they’ll modify treatment if you have drains, seromas, etc.?
💲 Cost & Logistics
*Do they provide a clear pricing structure (per session/package)?
*Are the sessions 30–60 minutes long, depending on your needs?
*Do they offer in-home massage services (if you’re not mobile)?
*Can you book multiple sessions in advance (often cheaper in packages)?
🕒 Massage Timing & Readiness
*Will they wait until your surgeon clears you (especially if drains are still in)?
*Are they familiar with timing for common surgeries (like tummy tuck, lipo, BBL)?
*Do they track progress across sessions (swelling reduction, fibrosis, etc.)?
❌ Red Flags
*They pressure you into deep tissue massage too soon
*They aren’t familiar with surgical recovery needs
*Their practice is more spa-focused than post-op specialized
*They don’t ask about your medical history or incisions
*They're not open to coordinating with your plastic surgeon
