Greetings from Vicky,
I am writing to you with bitter/sweet news. Labor of Love Birth Center has closed its doors after serving the East Texas area for the past 30 years. Through the years your birth stories have bloomed, some making us laugh, some making us cry, but most of all, making us thankful for all of you that have blessed us by sharing a special part of your life’s journey.
Since 2003 I have tried to serve women with quality care and support. Over the years I have had amazing women helping me in various rolls such as a great teacher, faithful students, trusted midwives, supportive doulas and reliable assistants. I could not have survived a busy practice and physically demanding job for 18 years without them. It has come time to slow down with a limited home birth practice with an office in Lindale. This will allow me to be more available for the needs of my family.
Midwives are a valuable resource for the childbearing women in the chaotic world of healthcare in these days and times. I encourage everyone to find a way to encourage society to uphold the midwifery model of care and increase women’s access to the quality care it provides.
God Bless

It is with a bittersweet heart I share that July will be my last month as a midwife at Labor of Love. My midwifery journey officially began 5 years ago within these walls. I have been inspired and challenged, and experienced so much LOVE - it has truly been a season of growth and abundant blessing.

As often happens in our life journey, I have come to a crossroad. It has become apparent that, for my own health, and the well-being of my family, I need to take a step back and simply "be" for a while. Although I have genuinely loved serving the hundreds of families that have walked through our door, I am keenly aware of my highest calling: to serve my own family. So, going forward I am going to focus on the babies under my own roof. I am going to practice what I have preached to so many of you about self-care and being intentional with the ones we love. To each of the amazing women I have walked alongside, thank you for inviting me into, and trusting me with the most sacred seasons of your lives; each of you has left an indelible mark on my life.
Love,
Erin

✨Giveaway✨

Do you know a mother? Not surprisingly, I do too! In fact I know so many that are so strong, so dedicated, that ache with the resolution of their role in the life’s of their young ones. An hour massage is not enough to thank them for creating a world that is uplifted by our youth, but it’s a start!

States that give midwives a greater role in patient care achieve better results on key measures of maternal and neonatal health, according to a new study.

Breast milk is a powerful source of protection as well as nutrition for your little ones. Keep pressing forward, mama! 💚

Breast milk is a powerful source of protection as well as nutrition for your little ones. Keep pressing forward, mama! 💚

A photo showing droplets of breast milk fending off armies of harmful bacteria in Petri dishes is going viral on Facebook.⁣

The photo, posted by a biology student in England, features nine Petri dishes completely colonized with the bacteria M. Luteus, except in the center, where tiny puddles of breast milk have created what looks like “moats” of protection around themselves.⁣

The student, Vicky Green, said she had similar results with Petri dishes full of e.Coli and the dreaded anti-biotic resistant “super bug” MRSA.⁣

“The white spots in the middle are discs soaked in two samples of breastmilk,” Green wrote in the caption of her post. “See the clear bit around the discs ― that’s where the proteins in the milk have inhibited the bacteria!”⁣

An article from YourPediatrician.com explains how this is possible:⁣

“About 80 percent of the cells in breast milk are macrophages, cells that kill bacteria, fungi and viruses. Breast-fed babies are protected, in varying degrees, from a number of illnesses, including pneumonia, botulism, bronchitis, staphylococcal infections, influenza, ear infections, and German measles. Furthermore, mothers produce antibodies to whatever disease is present in their environment, making their milk custom-designed to fight the diseases their babies are exposed to as well.”⁣

What’s even more impressive is that the samples of milk in the photos came from the mother of a 15-month-old and a 3-year-old, providing further evidence that breast milk continues to protect against illness long beyond infancy.
