This is a space that’s close to my heart and an incredible offering for Grievers as we near Fathers Day.

05/04/2025

May is Maternal Mental Health Month.
Today is Bereaved Mother’s Day. ⁣

Our culture doesn’t tolerate grief well. We are often afraid of grief. ⁣

It is so intense. Raw. Visceral. ⁣
It is unlike any other emotion or experience. ⁣

So we avoid. ⁣
Grievers avoid. ⁣
Grief witnessers avoid. ⁣

But the thing is, the grief is still there. Because the love does not disappear with the death of our beloved. ⁣

As difficult as grief can be, it is an equally precious and sacred connection. ⁣

Hold space today for the moms who live with the absence of a child. Let their tears wet your shirt and let the stories fill your world. Lean in. Do not try to take their grief. Do not try to make it better. Let it be. Listen and let yourself feel with them. ⁣

To the mama who have lost a precious one, no matter how old your child was at the time of loss, you have permission to feel it all. Feel the grief, the anger, the anguish, the pain, the laughter, the joy, the tenderness, and above all the love. ⁣

May someone around you say the name of your beloved and share a memory, today and every day. ⁣

When I first read this quote, it hit me like a ton of bricks. My stomach literally hit the floor and I felt a burning in my chest that crept up to my eyes. I knew in the fibers of my being how true this quote is. ⁣

He was 3 months old and he would cry when I held him. My second born had a preference for his daddy early on. While we joked about this daddy’s boy, my insides felt like they were ripped open. ⁣

While my heart broke each time his tiny cries ceased at his fathers loving hold, my brain yelled at me that he was the only one who really knew what a terrible mother I was. He preferred his daddy because he knew the truth. Shame was strangling me but I couldn’t see it. I just accepted it as truth. I was harboring this secret that only he and I knew…. The secret of who I really was and what kind of mom I really was. ⁣

Now I know I was suffering from at least one perinatal mood and anxiety disorder. ⁣
But in the midst of it, I couldn’t have told you that. I just thought the way I felt- the sadness, the wall between me and my son, the anxiety, the irritability and anger… were all just indicators of how awful I truly am. ⁣

I hid it. I don’t even know that I knew I was hiding it. But talking about it now the people around me didn’t know how badly I felt. My husband didn’t realize it. My friends and family didn’t. ⁣

I share for the people around the mamas. If she seems okay, ask her if she really is. And the ask again. And again. If she doesn’t seem okay, ask her. Push her to care for herself. Push her to get help. Let her know you’re there for her. ⁣

Help is crucial for mamas that are struggling…. It’s crucial for all moms- we aren’t meant to do this alone. ⁣

I share for the mamas out there struggling… because here’s the thing. I’m not a perfect mom. I am a deeply flawed mom. But I’m also a really good mom. That shame narrative? That was a lie I couldn’t tell was a lie. I needed others to name it for me and I’m grateful they did. ⁣

You are a good mom. You don’t have to be perfect or feel perfect. ⁣

You are a mom worthy of support and love. 💜⁣
