Easy bruising is common in Lipedema

Cleveland Clinic lists easy bruising as a recognized lipedema symptom, and recent reviews describe it as a frequent feature of the condition.

Helpful prevention ideas:

Wear properly fitted compression if you tolerate it well, especially on days with more standing, travel, or activity.
Choose low-impact exercise and gradual progression instead of high-impact activity that leaves the tissue sore or repeatedly bumped.
Protect the legs from minor trauma when possible: avoid tight edges, sharp furniture corners, rough massage, and repetitive pressure from straps or hard equipment.
Keep skin moisturized and healthy. Skin care is part of conservative limb care because irritated skin and swelling make tissues harder to manage.
Review medications and supplements with your clinician if bruising suddenly gets worse. NIH notes aspirin and ibuprofen can increase bruising tendency.

For fresh bruises, think “cool, calm, and lift”:

Ice or a cold pack wrapped in cloth for about 10 to 20 minutes at a time during the first 24 to 48 hours.
Elevate the area when you can to reduce swelling and pain.
Light compression can help if it feels comfortable and is not too tight.
Do not massage a new bruise in the first 24 to 48 hours, because that can aggravate bleeding into the tissue.
For pain, acetaminophen is often the gentler option for a bruise. NSAIDs like aspirin or ibuprofen may increase bruising in some people, so check with your clinician if you use them regularly or need them for another reason.
After about 48 hours, warm compresses can help the bruise resolve.

When to get checked sooner:

bruises that appear with no clear reason and are becoming more frequent
a very large, tense, or rapidly expanding bruise
major pain, trouble walking, or limited movement near a joint
bruising near the eye with vision changes
signs of infection, fever, or worsening swelling
if you take blood thinners, or bruise easily in places beyond the typical lipedema areas

A simple lipedema-friendly bruising kit:

soft reusable cold pack
thin towel barrier
comfortable compression garment
fragrance-free moisturizer
acetaminophen if your clinician says it is appropriate

What a strong woman! 🩷

I woke up this morning with direction and purpose on my heart/mind. Lipedema is not something I would have ever picked to be known for! But if that’s what it takes, then so be it. I want to advocate for better lipedema care in Tyler, Texas.
Christis Trinity Mother Francis is a good hospital system, but like all other facilities in the state of Texas, and most in the country, there are no trained specialists in lymph sparing liposuction for stage 4 or higher lipedema patients. (And few for earlier stages as well.)
I am writing to some of the executives in administration to hopefully start the process of educating the medical community where I live on lipedema, so future patients don’t have to travel across the country for surgical care. And to raise awareness that this is a hereditary disease, affecting almost exclusively women, that if left untreated will greatly diminish the quality of life, and should be covered by insurance!

This week we heard powerful testimony from our patients about their struggles with these disorders.

We hate to hear how hard it has been, but we love how much hope they have when they leave the store.

Spread awareness! They are NOT the same and they both can be treated! 🦋💙💜

🩵Lipedema vs. Lymphedema: They Are NOT the Same🩵

Many people hear these two words used interchangeably—but lipedema and lymphedema are different conditions, even though they can look similar and sometimes occur together.

💠 Lipedema
• A fat disorder, not a fluid disorder
• Almost always affects women
• Causes symmetrical fat buildup on hips, thighs, legs, and sometimes arms
• Feet and hands are usually spared
• Fat is often painful, tender, and bruises easily
• Diet and exercise do not significantly reduce it
• Often misunderstood as “just weight gain”

💠 Lymphedema
• A lymphatic system disorder
• Caused by impaired lymph flow
• Leads to fluid buildup (swelling)
• Can affect one limb or both, including feet and hands
• Skin may feel tight, heavy, or firm
• Can progress to fibrosis and skin changes if untreated
• Managed with compression, lymphatic drainage, and skin care

💠 When They Overlap
Some people live with lipedema that progresses into lymphedema—this is often called lipo-lymphedema. This is why proper diagnosis matters.

✨ Why Awareness Matters
Misdiagnosis delays treatment, increases physical pain, and adds emotional frustration. Understanding the difference helps patients advocate for the care they deserve.🦋

Awareness leads to earlier diagnosis.
Earlier diagnosis leads to better quality of life.🩵🦋

🌡️ Heat and Lymphedema: What You Should Know

Lymphedema Awareness Month Day #24 🩵

Those living with Lymphedema, even something as simple as heat can make symptoms worse.

🥵 When the body gets hot, blood vessels expand. This causes more fluid to move into the tissues.
A healthy lymphatic system would normally drain that fluid—but with lymphedema, it cannot keep up.

The result is not just visible swelling.

👇It can mean:
• Increased pain and heaviness
• Tight, uncomfortable skin
• Increased fatigue
• A higher risk of serious infections like cellulitis

👇Something as routine as:
• Sitting in the sun
• Taking a hot shower
• Being outside on a humid day
can trigger a noticeable flare.

Over time, repeated swelling from heat can lead to lasting changes in the body, including tissue hardening and increased complications.

☀️ This is why managing lymphedema isn’t just about treatment—it’s about avoiding triggers that many people never think twice about.

💕 So when you see someone covering their limbs, avoiding the heat, or adjusting their environment,
please understand…

It’s not about comfort.
It’s about protecting their health.
