Have you ever felt stuck between two desires, that one part of you wants one thing and
another wants the opposite? This sensation is the reality that Richard Schwartz speaks to in hisbook “No Bad Parts,” where he offers an understanding of the mind that is not singular, but multiple. These multiple minds show up as “Parts”; consciousnesses with different motivations, desires, and wounds. At the core of a person is the Self, the part of someone that is most able to lead with clarity; this shows up in a person that embodies connectedness, compassion, courage, and other similar virtues. Schwartz argues that wounds cause Parts to take greater leadership in a person, manifesting in dysfunctional behaviors and thought patterns. Therapy, then, is the process of detangling these Parts and empowering the Self to lead with greater clarity.
Schwartz’s big thesis is this: There are no bad Parts. When you come into my office, I
find that all the Parts that exist within you are not “bad” so long as you give them a task that is productive. Decoding our understanding of human nature, we find that the Parts of ourselves we are most frustrated with are the ones trying to help us the most. My work starts and ends full of respect and free of judgment. I work with people to show them how their Parts frustrate the process of living your life and how to lead from the Self; the goal isn’t for these Parts to go away but to integrate them into a meaningful, intelligible whole. Corny as it might be, I think the
saying is true—maybe the moment when you feel like your life is falling apart is actually your life falling together.
