Who Is Eligible for Home Health Care?
Home health care provides patients with the opportunity to receive professional medical services in the comfort of their own homes. For individuals recovering from illness or injury, this type of care offers a convenient and effective alternative to hospital or facility-based treatment. In many cases, home health services may be covered through Medicare Part A (Hospital Insurance) and/or Medicare Part B (Medical Insurance) when certain conditions are met.
To be eligible for home health care, a patient must require part-time or intermittent skilled services and must be considered homebound. Being homebound means that leaving home is difficult and often requires assistance due to a medical condition.
A person may qualify as homebound if they need help from another individual or rely on supportive equipment such as a cane, walker, wheelchair, or crutches to leave their home. Some individuals may also require special transportation because of their condition. In other cases, a healthcare provider may recommend that a patient remain at home because leaving could worsen their health or slow recovery.
Additionally, patients who are normally unable to leave their home because it requires a major physical effort may also meet the homebound requirement. Once a doctor or healthcare provider determines that home health services are medically necessary, the patient can begin receiving care at home, with services continuing as long as the physician confirms that the care remains appropriate.
Home health care ensures that eligible patients receive the support they need while allowing them to recover or manage their health in a familiar and comfortable environment.
