Next Step Community Solutions

Next Step Community Solutions Next Step Community Solutions is a nonprofit with a mission to create healthy, vibrant communities through training, education, mentoring, and counseling.

Founded in 1984, Better Business Bureau Accredited Charity Next Step has been located in Tyler, Texas since our founding in 1984. We were originally established as Sister Communities Council on Alcohol and Drug Abuse (SCCADA) to address the issues of youth alcohol and substance abuse. We have 3 programs that help create healthy communities through training, education, mentoring, and counseling:

Our Community Coalition Partnership Program works to bring concerned community forces together to prevent alcohol and drug abuse with East Texas youth. This program is funded primarily by the Department of State Health Services (DSHS). Our coalitions seek to alter community perceptions and public policy. We have three coalitions that support 9 counties. Our Comprehensive Counseling Program works alongside schools and juvenile probation offices to offer counseling services for less than the cost of a full-time district employee. Our Community Assistance Service helps citizens find the services they need to help them, or loved ones, overcome alcohol and/or substance abuse problems. Our staff helps them take that first step of calling the appropriate agency to schedule an assessment or counseling session.

When emotions feel overwhelming, having practical tools ready to use can make a big difference. Help your child build a personalized coping toolkit with strategies they can use during hard moments, and practice them before they need them most!

~movement that shifts your mood~
Physical movement helps release built-up stress and regulate emotions. Walking, stretching, dancing, or quick exercises can create space between intense feelings and reaction!

~music that helps you process~
Create playlists for different emotions, calming, encouraging, or validating. Music can help us name feelings and feel understood!

~creative outlets~
Journaling, drawing, doodling, writing freely, or creating something messy gives emotions a safe place to come out without judgment!

~grounding tools for intense moments~
Techniques like holding ice, practicing 5-4-3-2-1, deep breathing, or focusing on physical sensations bring the nervous system back to the present!

~connection as a coping skill~
Reaching out to a trusted person, texting a safe adult, or sitting near family reminds teens they are not alone in hard moments!

~self-soothing through the senses~
Engage the senses to create comfort, wrap up in a soft blanket, drink something warm, go outside, use calming scents, or listen to soothing sounds. These small actions can quickly signal safety to the brain!

Reminder for parents:
Encourage experimentation, not every tool works every time, and that’s okay. Building awareness and practice strengthens resilience over time!

What would happen if you gave your brain a real break today?

For Global Day of Unplugging, consider logging off for a little while. That means no scrolling, no notifications, no pressure to keep up. Instead, we replace that with space to breathe, think, rest, and be present.

Even a short break can help reset your mind and boost your mood. Real life is happening off screen, too!

When your teen or child is struggling with self-harm or intense emotions, connection is one of the most powerful protective factors. Parents don’t need perfect answers. it is your presence, patience, and safety that make a difference!

Here are some practical ways to build connection:

- Stay curious, not critical
Ask open-ended questions like:
“Can you help me understand what’s been feeling heavy lately?”
“What has been the hardest part for you this week?”

- Listen more than you fix
Resist the urge to immediately solve or minimize the pain. Sometimes youth just need to feel heard and validated before receiving advice.

- Small check-ins matter
Simple texts like:
“Thinking about you"

- Create a safe space for honesty
Reassure your child that they won’t get in trouble for sharing hard feelings and that they can talk about difficult thoughts without automatic punishment.

- Know when to seek support
If you notice warning signs or feel concerned, reaching out to a counselor or trusted professional is a strength, not a failure. Early support makes a lasting difference!

March is Self-Harm Awareness Month
This month, we’ll be sharing supportive, hope-filled content focused on healthy coping skills, emotional resilience, how to support a friend, and where to find help. Our goal is simple: reduce stigma, increase understanding, and remind every student and parent that no one has to walk through hard moments alone!

If this topic matters to you, we encourage you to follow along, save posts that resonate, and share them with someone who may need the reminder!
