Online fraud is a terrible problem, especially for older folks who might not recognize a scam. Here are some tips to avoid fraud:
Be cautious if you get an email and it doesn’t use your full name or has a generic greeting; if it has incorrect logos or the design looks strange; if it uses suspicious website links, or if it has attachments.
Be wary of a false urgency. Scams often create a false sense of urgency. If in doubt, open a new tab on your browser and log in to your bank or other financial account to check for urgent messages or notifications.
Watch out for offers that seems too good to be true. Scammers may use false promises like money in exchange for a favor, lottery wins, or unsolicited job offers.
Never provide personal, credit card or account information via email, text, or phone.
Only use your financial company’s secure website to update your personal information, including your full name, credit and debit card numbers, bank account numbers, driver's license number, email, and password.
